Microsoft is unsurprisingly saying goodby to the "Aero" user interface with Windows 8, calling it "dated and cheesy." Aero has been a mainstay since the debut of Windows Vista back in 2006, requiring a bit more GPU horsepower from machines than those running 2001's Windows XP, both of which are still currently being used worldwide.

The new user interface for Windows 8 looks good since I never like the Aero effects in Windows 7 and Vista because they make the Windows kind of blurry/less-sharp, and use more screen space on my monitor, so I just use the Classic Windows theme style since it looks sharper, uses less screen space, and runs faster on my computer.

I hope It will be possible to change the white color to gray, black, or blue since some people might want a different color because their desktop wallpaper background is a darker picture.

Although, I think it won't really matter what the Windows UI look like since a lot of popular software like Google Chrome use their own custom Window/skin/theme, so it look almost the same on all computer operating sysystem like Windows, Apple Mac, Linux, and Android.

Maybe MS was reffering to the Animations, effects and performance of Aero which is somewhat slower then the Classic theme, and this theme because of the see-through effects.

I think this theme might make Windows 8 perform slightly faster in desktop mode then Windows 7 because your CPU, RAM, and GPU probably won't be slowed down with all those special effects and animations which most typical PC users don't really need or care about.

The Bottom start menu toolbar also looks more smooth like glass, and less blurry like in Windows 7 which was one of the things I dislike about Aero.

This new desktop design for Windows 8 is pretty good for computer newbies since the windows and big buttons are simple and clean, and they have labels/text next to them, so users can read the title bar, and text on the toolbar better, and faster then with Aero which have colors which can be distracting.

I think MS is trying to re-design their software for newbies and average computer users which rather have a simple and clean user interface then a user interface which is flashy, and hard to understand at first sight while slowing down their PC if they don't have a good video card...

I also bet there would be plenty of software makers which will make an Aero theme for people who don't like the simple and clean theme which Windows 8 currently have.

Well the thing is, there's something called an option to disable Aero... -_- So why don't they just do that instead of removing the feature entirely?

Maybe there is not much demand for Aero by the typical users, and users said they prefer the non-Aero theme compared to Aero.

Aero is easy to disable, but a lot of people don't disable it since they are too lazy to turn it off, or don't know how to turn it off. A lot of users just use their computer, but don't change settings.

A non-aero theme will make Windows 8 compatible with more slower video cards and integrated video. One complaint about Aero is it is not compatible with older video cards, and slow down computers if it has a slower video card, and low specs.

Microsoft is making Windows 8 for Tablets to compete with iPad and Android, so people might complain that Aero makes their lower-end Tablet which uses an Intel Atom or Celeron CPU and slow graphic cards slow compared to simpler User interfaces like Google Android, Blackberry, Apple iOS, WebOS, etc which are less flashy, but run smooth on most 1GHz CPU with 512MB RAM, and a slower video card.

I agree a lot of the hardcore/power user and younger users might be mad at the decisons Microsoft made.

But, this can make a lot more people and companies with slower computers like Tablets, Netbooks, and low-end/older desktop and laptops happy since they can use the latest version of Windows which will be 8 even if they don't have a good video card, but have a fast enough CPU, and enough RAM to run Windows 8 at the recommended minimum requirements.

I think Microsoft Windows 8 is also trying to get more lowend customers who might pick Linux, Chrome OS, etc because their computer is too slow for a newer version Windows.

I bet a third party company like Stardock Windows Blinds , hacker/modder or MS will just make a Aero theme software pack for people who want it, and are willing to pay a small fee like 20 dollars, or install a free theme over Windows 8 to make it look like Windows 7.

Like how modders/hackers modify Windows XP to look like 7 with software, and themes.

I think it might also depend on videocard RAM and GPU speed which do some of the work. Aero can't run on some PCI and older AGP videocards which came out during the Windows XP days.

But, Aero does support newer Intel Integrated onboard video when Vista and 7 came out.

I think you are right about the system RAM doing some of the work for displaying Aero since when I turn off Aero on older computers. It seem to use a little less RAM, and CPU cycles.

Aero's quite cool. why are they removing it?

Most likely,MS is cancelling Aero on Windows 8, so Windows 8 can also run fast on Tablets, and slower computers which can't handle the Aero effects, or hope people who have Windows Vista and XP computer can upgrade to Windows 8 because Aero is removed, so older computers can handle the non-Aero user interface in Windows 8.

Windows 8 is also making Operating System for mobile/portable computers which are slower and cheaper computers for very basic task which can't handle Aero Well.
