Windows 7 market share has declined, dropping to 44.48% in January from 45.11% the previous month. Meanwhile, Windows 8 market share is up, having gained 0.58% in January to post an overall market share of 2.36% - this shows marginally slower growth for Windows 8 in January, with the operating system's December market share rising 0.66%.

Windows XP saw a gain of 0.43% in January to post a share of 39.51%.

I'm guesing a lot of people took advantaged of the $39.99 Licenses for Windows 8 until January 31, people switching to free operating systems like Linux because they did not like 8, and 7 was too expensive compared to the 39.99 price tag of 8, and people abandoning windows forever for alternatice paid operating systems like Apple Mac OS X, and iOS which made Windows 7 have fewer users in 2013.

Surprising that Windows XP saw a gain of 0.43%. I think this is caused by people who don't like Windows 8, but still have a Windows XP license key laying around, and newer cheap computers like the Raspberry Pi, Nettops, Netbooks, and cheaper desktops which work best with Windows XP because it has lower system requirements then Vista-8.

I bet there maybe a chance that Windows XP would be the mosted used operating system again since Microsoft might stop supporting and selling 7 in the near future, and the only option is 8, so people who don't like 8 won't upgrade from XP, or use eBay to buy a used copy of XP.

Due to companies the Win 8 share might have gone up, but individual users still prefer Win 7

I agree companies who decide to buy their employees Windows 8 tablets, and laptops instead of iPads, and Google Android tablets may make the 8 share go up.

People are also learning more about Free Startmenu/Startbutton programs for Windows 8 desktop like Classic Shell which basicly turns Windows 8 back to Windows 7 with the familiar Windows Startbutton on the bottom left corner, and the classic desktop after you installed Classic Shell on a Windows 8 PC, so people who need to buy a new PC, but don't want 8 can just install Classic Shell to turn Windows 8 desktop into the Windows 7 desktop with a Startbutton and Startmenu for free with Classic Shell instead of spending hundreds downgrading to Windows 7.
