Windows XP rose 0.25 percent in January, taking its total to more than 29 percent, or almost one in three machines.

I bet the small rise of XP users are from people who bought used computer on eBay, and Craigslist during the holidays. Used XP computers are cheaper than used Windows 7 computers. There are also fewer used Windows 8-8.1 computer for sale because Windows 8 is not very old.

It is also very easy to pirate XP which is popular in places like China where most of the internet population use pirated or cheaper version of XP.

I'm surprise there are still so many XP computers running since most XP computers are probably now almost 10 years old because Windows XP is almost 13 years old. I think this prove that computers last a long time when properly maintained by cleaning out dust from inside the case, using a surge protected power bar, and turning a PC off when users are not using it.

Also, I notice computers made during the Windows XP years seem to be more high quality compared to 7 to 8 computers which are cheaply made to sell for very low prices while still making a small profit. I owned 2 computers designed to work for XP, and they still work today.

I wonder if those who join up herd that XP support is about to be discontiuned?

I read on a blog that if you pay $200 a year per computer for extended support from Microsoft, you can still get important updates after Windows no longer support XP for regular users who don't want to pay $200 a year for extended support.

It will cost about $200 per device per year, plus extra charges for some of the important patches.

It will be cheaper to upgrade to the latest version of Windows, or use Linux which is free.
