Worst antivirus

McAfee. Hands down.

I think I posted my reasoning a while back here a long time ago. It's even a pain to uninstall :/

I did not like Norton Antivirus which got bundled with my PC. It seems slower than other antivirus I used.

Mcafee, norton and Avast.

Anything by Norton.
Their antivirus is slow at best and the software is so bloated it slows any computer down too much. Even a blazing fast one (like an octa core one with 32GB of DDR4 and a 512GB SSD) would still probably feel the slowdown. Removing Norton is also a pain in the backside (but not as bad as McAfee though).
Additionally their detection rating tends to be pretty low compared to others. So overall it's just not worth installing even if you got it for free. (The fact it's a paid program only makes it more obnoxious.)

McAfee isn't as bad, but it's not exactly great either. It's not as resource intensive but it's far and above more annoying to remove. (Have to uninstall then use a specialized tool to remove remnants.) If memory serves it also doesn't have a great detection rating either.

everything said so far plus anything paid. You really shouldn't have to pay for your AV.

Also I might be suggesting Avira, I'm not liking it of late. Seems heavy on resources. And my winpatrol is having issues with it.

I feel there are now too many Windows viruses to use a computer safely when online.
Plus, the viruses are getting a lot of advance like Ransomware which holds your computer and files hostage until you pay money to the virus maker. Having an antivirus and using common sense may not protect your PC all the time from a virus because of how many viruses there are, and how advance they have become.

I think it is now a better idea to browse the web and do other tasks like opening media files on a Linux PC which has fewer virus problems because Linux has more strict permissions and restrictions where you have to enter your admin username, and password to do tasks like installing programs,

I disagree e.e

However, you can survive with just a bit of common sense and Microsoft Security Essentials or Malwarebyes.

I also disagree. You should have to pay for your antivirus because there's nobody out there who works for free, and keeping track of the latest internet threats every single day is a tough job. If I have money, I always prefer to buy a licensed antivirus than use a free one.

Usually this is sound and right thinking, but it's not that simple. All companies keep their antivirus, free or paid updated to the latest version or they be completely worthless and they do make money off of ads and their other products. And when you pay for antivirus, you're really not paying for the virus scan itself, you're just paying for more other/different security features. Features I really don't need or is taken care of by other programs.

Plus I haven't had a virus in two years, I've had more malware and spyware than viruses in my lifetime.

As a gamer the worst AV i found to be is Kaspersky as it annoys the crap out of me while gaming (never get a peaceful moment ;) )
Also it does slow down the fps of few games :(

The worst one I have recently used was Ad-Aware (the security suite from Lavasoft). Their trial version is literally useless. It took more than 12 hours to scan my PC, while all of the other antivirus programs I have used so far took less than 3 hours. The only things it detected as potentially dangerous were the backups of my website. Like, wtf? How is an archive of my website a potential threat. I scanned it afterwards with Hitman Pro and found out that the archives are perfectly safe.

I heard Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Defender are not very good because of their low virus detection rate, and slow performance on slower Windows PC.

I don't get it. What missing files? What are you talking about? Avira is one of the best out there.
Well, the application isn't complete and when I tried to install some other program it gave me a warning that the avira files are still present. It was a mess.

I am not 100 % certain about that, a buddy had fully updated essentials but he lost his credentials etc due to virus/bot-net attacks. I suggested him Bit-defender, it just resolved every issue after a complete scan.
