Would Majora's Mask 3D sell?

That's my main worry about the whole idea, Majora's Mask was a decent game, but it never sold that well when it was first released.

According to VG Chartz (I know its inaccurate, but even a guess is more useful than just first year sales), it sold about 3.5 million copies.

Problem is, remakes almost always do worse. Ocarina of Time 3D sold just about 2.5 million, less than half what it sold originally. If Majora's Mask continues this trend, it'd sell just about 1 million copies total if remade.

Would it be worth it for Nintendo? At least business wise?

We're talking a remake of one of the least successful games in the series on a brand new console which hasn't even had a new Zelda game yet. It seems like something which would be a lot of effort to please a bunch of random people on the internet.

What do you think?

Why not? MM is graphically better than OoT (at least that's what N want us to think) and the game is an underrated gem. I could buy it, heck it could even make me wanna buy OoT 3D.

Majora's Mask had a lot of reasons for poor sales, none of which revolve around the quality of the game itself.

1) it was an end of console release, and back before there were backwards comparable systems. It was on shelves for 13 months in the US before the GameCube was released, and by the time MM came out in the States, Zelda fans had already been treated to a tech demo of what Zelda might look like on the upcoming GCN. It was essentially inferior before it hit shelves. This time around, even if they wait until later in the 3DS lifetime, the game will be playable on the next system too. Look at all the DS games they are still releasing. (Also fun fact: for the amount of time it was available in stores MM actually sold more copies per month than any other Zelda title)

2) Nintendo did an awful job with marketing it. Every ad emphasizes only the time limit rather than the more appealing aspects, such as the cool powers from shape shifting, the meaningful character interaction, and the brilliantly designed dungeons. The ads also show very little gameplay footage. This could well happen again, but hopefully it won't, and at least now it's easy to go look up what MM is actually like.

3) fans at the time reacted negatively to such an unusual game because they were all expecting something just like Ocarina. This lead to bad word of mouth. This won't be a problem now because MM gets tons of praise and isn't as unusual compared to the wider variety in the series today.

4) when it was released on th N64 MM needed the expansion pak, which made it more expensive than other games. This discouraged people from giving it try. This will not be a problem now either, because the 3DS is more than capable of handling MM.

Majora's Mask has done very well since its release on the Wii Virtual Console, in the past year it has not left the top ten most registered downloads list, and stands in first place for this year. I heard that it has been on that list since its release in 2009, but I have no way to know if that person was truthful. I do know that Majora's Mask is the third most popular Zelda game everywhere I look, including non-Zelda-specific sites, and even non-gaming-specific sites.

I'm not psychic, so I don't know what the sales will look like, but I think that if Nintendo takes note of some of the fan complaints and fixes them like they did for Ocarina of Time, and if they market it properly, Majora's Mask 3D could sell better than the original did.

To be honest, your question and some of your statements astonish me.

First of all, MM is a game that didn't sell well as most of the other Zelda games, but it did sell 3 million copies worldwide, plus it garnered raving reviews. So by most standards, the game was a HUGE success. Just read through this section: http://en.wikipedia...._Mask#Reception

So, yes, it would be worthwhile, of course it would be! And that remakes don't sell as well as their original games stands to reason. But to produce a remake is much less expensive than producing a brandnew original game from scratch.

There are many many people who didn't get Majora's Mask for one reason or another when it was released for the N64... and those people would definitely buy the 3DS version, if given a chance.

I think it's likely that Majora's Mask 3D, if released, will ultimately sell as many copies as the N64 version, which was slightly over 3 million copies. Which is not an unreasonable assumption, considering that Ocarina of Time 3D, which was released only 1 year ago, has already sold approximately 2,7 million copies worldwide.
