I think it would have been a bit cooler if Nintendo had picked a different Youtube channel name for it than 'Cursed Memoir'
Then they could have pretended it was some real supernatural horror/mystery story and then got a ridiculous amount more attention on the internet.
Think about this for a minute. Many times a story is said to be 'real' as viral marketing, the media coverage goes through the roof. Look at creepypasta stories like Ben Drowned or that Lavender Town Syndrome thing. Or in other media. Here's an old example of an 'unknown' celebrity blog which become a sort of phenomenon because no one knew who was writing it and speculation went wild:

If Nintendo had pretended this Cursed Memoir stuff was real, it could have hit the front page of various national news sources for a few days, likely Digg/Slashdot/Stumbleupon, been all over 4chan for a while and ended up covered on Snopes and the Museum of Hoaxes. Literally, I'd bet if they'd said it was real the Youtube channel would have ended up as being a hundred or even a thousand times more popular in terms of subscribers, comments, general attention, etc.
What do you think?
