I might buy a wired-only router or switch if I need to cheaply connect two or more computers together to share files and play offline-multiplayer PC games by using a wired-only router, and two or more networking cables.
If it's for connecting only 2 computers I'd not bother, I'd just run a cable directly between them. Or I'd just go through wifi anyway. But if I were connecting multiple computers for lan gaming then I'd consider it. (Especially for older games that might not have wifi capability but can work via LAN.)
I think you need a special crossover network cable which is sometimes harder to find at some stores, and difficult to make on your own by using a cable and the plastic network cable plugs on the end.
I think, with some wifi routers now being so cheap where you can buy one for $10 or less on eBay, Amazon, etc it probably be easier and more worth it just to buy a cheap wifi router, and disable the wifi signal, if you want to, and use the 4 wired ports for connecting to other PCs with network cables.
Plus, most routers come with 1 or more network cables, so you don't need to buy as many network cables separately.
I notice a lot of wired-only routers are harder to find sometimes at a store like BestBuy and Walmart because most people just buy wifi routers, so many regular stores no longer sell wired-only routers.
