Would you buy or make an App for someone as a Christmas Gift

If they asked for it? Maybe.

If they didn't ask for it? Absolutely not. I want to be able show show them I bought them something. (I mean I'm not a huge fan of buying anything unless I get a tangible product from it. For software this means I want a CD/DVD or even a flash drive with the program loaded on it. Something that I can have to say "I own this copy of the software". So that I can install it on whatever machine I want or give it away as I see fit and no company can take it back from me or the recipient easily.)

There are ways to back up Apps to a CD/DVD, flash drive, or other storage device. Some File Explorer's for Android like File Expert let you back up your App to a MicroSD card, or your internal storage on your device.

I think backing up apps is also possible with iOS, but you need to use a computer or have your iPhone or iPad Jail Broken.

One of the advantages of digital files vs CD/DVD is they don't get lost, scratched, or cracked, and you can easily download and reinstall them on other devices which you own by logging into your Google Play or iTunes account to redownload them from the app store after you logged in.

Plus, it is easy to gift a digital PC game from Steam, Minecraft, GOG.com, humble indie bundle, etc without physically meeting someone, or using the postal service which can be unreliable and expensive .

If they wanted it sure.

But I wouldn't tell them I made it as they might bug me for updates or more things.

I wonder if there are any custom app makers to make Christmas themed greeting apps with a persons face and voice on a famous character like Cloud from Final Fantasy 7.

It would be cool to get a Final Fantasy themed App, but with your face on voice on a character saying something Christmas related like Merry Christmas, and the card also comes with a mini game like those Chocobo games in Final Fantasy where you play games or ride your Chocobo around the world.
