Would you rather pay to play or play for free?

I spend hundreds of Hours to get in Warframe where I am.
But now I have kind of crisis... to get higher I would have to invest more money/time. And my question is about your experience - is it worth to pay for play.

In general here is screen from my Profile:

That is honestly a tough decision to make, its hard to draw a line between spending for convenience, and spending so you dont have to play the game as it should be played. Between spending $20 on a piece of equipment, and spending 20 hours to craft it yourself in the game, the $20 would be a far more effective use of your time. But would it really feel rewarding when you didn't actually "earn" it? A lot grow bored of the game soon after spending because they no longer have anything to look forward to.

So the question you need to ask yourself is whether you'll still have things you want in the game that you will have to work (play) for after investing money in the game. And whether the content remaining will keep you interested in the game for a long enough time.

As for the main topic, I'd say it really depends on the model of the game. For co-op games like Warframe, Team Fortress 2, League of Legends, and even Fortnite lol, a free to play model is actually beneficial for both the players and the devs/publishers. The biggest advantage is obviously the large player base, making it easy for people to get matched. That makes people that are willing to spend money of stuff like cosmetics, be it your casual spender or the "whales", more likely to stick around longer. Some content will of course be locked till you invest some time and money, but it's often well balanced. I tend to play this casually and thus prefer free to play.

Things get different when it is an actual MMO, and a massive number of players are evolving in the same environment. The game being an MMO means you will have to deal with the players around you whether you like it or not. That means toxic players, bots, saturated economies, and often, pay to win content. While co-op games also have their communities of toxic players, you can always quit the game and join a new lobby. In MMOs you just have to suck it up. And since the game is free, these toxic players often dont mind dealing with the in-game penalties, or even with a ban, since they can always make a new account with a new character.

So if I had to pick being buying the game or dealing with these disadvantages, I would pick the former.

Would rather play for free & grind. Regardless of how much money ($) an in game item costs. haha

It's one thing to pay for the game as it is. Video games are becoming more expensive as the years go buy. I remember when games weren't more than 20 or 25 or 30 dollars at the most. Now, games are coming out that are 50 or 60 dollars a wack. I can't imagine spending more money than that to play....

I would rather play for free if I could.

If Final Fantasy 14 is going free to play, I would so be all up in that game! Back then, I used to be so invested in this game called 'maplestory', and it was cool when it was free-to-play, but it wasn't fun anymore. Its cause it started to feel like pay-to-win type of deal. So yeah, I prefer free-to-play only.

I did hear rumors of them making a offline mode just to focus on the story.

Those games that were $20 were probably out for awhile. Without taking inflation into account, cartridge games back in the day used to be more expensive. I remember SNES and N64 games used to be $80 back when those were brand new.

Depends on the game - if it's a FPS game I would rather pay to play to minimize the amount of cheaters.
