Activision has confirmed that World of Warcraft has lost 1.3 million subscribers, pushing it down to eight million overall. According to Activision, the lost subscribers were “mainly from the East, but in the West as well.” Despite the decline, World of Warcraft remains "the #1 subscription-based MMORPG in the world."

World of Warcraft had as many as 10 million at the time of Mist of Pandaria’s release, and had more than 12 million at its peak in 2010.

Activision noted that the decline raises concerns, "as do continued challenges in the global economy. For these reasons, we remain cautious. However, our focused and disciplined approach to our business has served us well in the past, and through continued investment and careful management of our costs, we expect to continue delivering shareholder value over the long term as we have for the last 20 years.”

Well WoW won't last forever, and it's fanbase grows older and more busy with life.

Perhaps it's not so much that the fanbase is growing older... but that they don't find it as fun or engaging as they used to?
Because I've heard a lot of cases of people just getting completely burned out on WoW. They play it like crazy then they get bored and take a 3 month break then they try getting back into it... but can't so they pretty much stop playing.

Or alternatively, the subscription service has come to a point where it's growth can't be sustained. They reached their peak and now have begun to decline. People are tired of paying to keep playing. They're looking for other, new/fresh and cheaper games to get their gaming fix.
Especially when they have other bills to pay each month and so a 10-15$ MMO subscription really isn't high on the budget. (Especially if they're bored of the game or, like mentioned, don't have the time to dedicate to it.)

WoW still has 9.6 million subscribers according to http://wow.joystiq.com/2013/02/07/world-of-warcraft-down-to-9-6-million-subscribers/ , so it isn't really ending. I think WoW should try other payment methods like Free to play, in-game purchases, paying with Bitcoin and other virtual cash, or ad-supported gaming which may bring in more players.

WoW ESRB rating is teen, so there are not very young kids playing it, and I think a lot of the WoW players are mature adults base since it is a more adult theme game rather than kids game like Kirby, Donkey Kong, etc, so WoW players are not suddenly growing older, and losing time like teens who are young adults with poorer time management skills.

Maybe some WoW player moved on to Diablo 3, and other Blizzard and Activision games . There is also a Final Fantasy MMORPG which may attract WoW player to move to FF MMORPG.

League of Legends, Runescape, Star Wars: The Old Republic, and other MMORPG might be convincing more gamers to game for free because a lot of people find they are having as much playing free mmorpg, but without the yearly cost of a paid MMORPG.

Maybe WoW would also release a version of its game for the PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Next Xbox, Wii U, Linux, Android, iOS, Windows Phone and make a Web Browser version for WoW game like Runescape, so more people can play on different devices with different operating systems.

There is always a chance of Blizzard and Activision doing more harm to WoW, and causing massive amount of people to leave if they do too much too soon, and attract poor quality gamers like trolls, spammers, flamers, and un-decided gamers to WoW which can ruin the experience for WoW more loyal fans.

The user community would be smaller for WoW for now, but I think once more people has access to a good PC, fast internet, and money to pay for WoW there will be more players.

There is always a chance of WoW gamer someday recommending WoW to their kids, students, and relatives if the WoW gamer have teen kids, or know a lot of teens to adults. I saw a video on YouTube of a whole family playing WoW together.
