Microsoft's part, they've announced that Xbox Live Gold memberships have topped 23 million subscribers, making it "the biggest social network connected to the TV" (via Edge-Online). Additionally, Microsoft said that 2.3 million subscribers were logged in concurrently at one point during the month of January, marking a record high for the service.

But their claim at being the biggest social network on TVs curiously seems to have been refuted by Sony, as SCEA president Jack Tretton announced earlier this week on the PlayStation Blog that PlayStation Network has amassed 40 million users. "We've successfully established that we're not just a disc-based powerhouse, but we're also a digital powerhouse," Tretton wrote. "PlayStation Network experienced huge growth last year, marking its best revenue month in December -- a 155 percent increase in sales from the previous year. More than 40 million of you all over the world are coming to PlayStation Network to access multimedia content and to enhance your social gaming experiences."

It should be noted, though, that it's unclear exactly how Sony is counting their numbers -- Microsoft's Gold subscriptions are easy to count across the board, but whether Sony is including, say, anyone who happened to log onto the PlayStation Network last year or are distinguishing between those who actively play games online regularly wasn't detailed.
