Although gamers are free to try standing it up on its side, Xbox One is only designed to be laid flat on its bottom, Microsoft has reconfirmed. Microsoft first indicated the system was meant to be laid horizontally earlier this year, explaining to IGN that "the airflow and venting system was optimized for this horizontal orientation."

Following up on this, Microsoft's director of product planning for Xbox, Albert Penello, told GameSpot, "We don't support vertical orientation; do it at your own risk." He expounded on this, saying the risk comes not from ventilation, but the disc drive. "t wouldn't be a cooling problem, we just didn't design the drive for vertical. Because it's a slot loading drive, we just didn't design it for both," he explained.

Not good news for those with space issues.

What do you bet that the console ruins discs if you place it vertically? Just like on 360 if you bump the console while it's playing.

I mean if it actually does ruin game discs that'd be the second xbox console to be plagued with disc breaking problems. And this surely points to yet another sign microsoft is really rushing the xbox one.

I don't see how they could be rushing a console 8 years in the making.

It is kind of strange that Microsoft can't find a slot loading disc drive maker which can be vertical like the Wii, or Playstation 3 without scratching the discs.

Maybe Microsoft just wants to be safe, and tell their buyers that it is only possible to put the Xbox One in the horizontal position, so MS get fewer angry phone calls from people who got scratched disc when they move their console from vertical to horizontal, or horizontal to vertical while a disc is still spinning, and from people who's consoles tip over when vertical because they, their cat or dog tipped it over.

Plus, MS won't be resposible for broken consoles, and scratched disc if the console is put in the vertical position because the user manual will most likely warn people of not putting the console vertically to avoid damage.

Cartridges would be better, but game companies are too cheap to use cartridges. The last popular TV console to use cartridges was the Nintendo 64.

The Sony PSP UMD disc cartridges may also be better since it has a protective case to protect the disc from damage.
