In response to the news that its standby "Instant-on" mode was an energy drainer, Microsoft has announced that the Xbox One will soon give users the chance to activate the system's energy-saving mode at its initial console set-up.

This means users will no longer have to manually select the Energy-saving mode in the  system's menus, instead being given the choice up front. According to Microsoft, this will give consumers a chance to cut down on power bills while being conscious of their energy consumption.

According to Microsoft, the Energy-saving mode does not have the same benefits as the Instant-On, including a slower startup time and update interruptions.

Microsoft does explain that selecting the Energy-saving mode will save consumers money. In his study of the Xbox One's Instant-on mode's power consumption, writer Noah Horowitz estimated consumers could save up to $250 million per year in future energy bills.

In their statement, Microsoft claims the energy mode selection will be updated "in the coming months."
