Xiaomi lived up to its proper pronunciation on Wednesday by showing the world how to properly celebrate your birthday. As part of a fan festival to commemorate its fifth birthday, Xiaomi (pronounced “SHOW mee”) ran a 12-hour flash sale that ended up selling more than 2.1 million smartphones via Mi.com, its consumer-facing online store – good for a new Guinness World Record.

“The tech firm’s direct-to-customer website Mi.com store managed to sell an incredible 2,112,010 handsets over the course of its birthday, setting a new record for most mobile phones sold on a single online platform in 24 hours,” according to the Guinness World Records website.

Wow, 2.1 million smartphones in 24 hours is a lot of smartphone sold in a day.

Were they offering the devices at discount prices? Even so, it's still a pretty huge number of smartphones... Imagine how much work the courier delivery companies had to do in 24 hours...
I'm not sure, but Xiaomi smartphones are more affordable compared to other Google Android phone makers like Samsung, HTC, and Sony which sells their faster smartphones for hundreds of dollars more than Xiaomi.

first I'm hearing of this brand.

They're probably not that big on the USA market. In Europe they don't have a good reputation. Around here, Xiaomi is mostly considered a low-quality brand, well known for their cheap, low-end smartphones.
A lot of tech blogs, and their blog comments I read says that Xiaomi is a nice affordable brand which makes good smartphones.

I think most western countries consider the Apple iPhone the best smartphone brand, and consider Google Android phones lower quality compared to the iPhone because there are a lot of low quality Google Android phones even from big companies.
