On January 6, 2012, Square Enix will finally start charging players a subscription fee to continue adventuring in Eorzea. It's pretty well established at this point that Final Fantasy XIV launched well before it should have, and as a result the game has been in an extended free trial period for over one year. In the time since launch Square Enix made drastic moves, completely restructuring the development team and setting out to address player complaints with the Version 2.0 plan, outlined in detail on the Final Fantasy XIV official site.
In terms of payment specifics, if you still have a FFXIV account you haven't touched in a while, it will be suspended when the subscription fee kicks in to avoid unwanted charges. If you decide to sign up and pay Square Enix, you'll be charged 9.99 USD, a combined price that includes 30 days of access and one character save slot, until Version 2.0 has been finished and released. After Version 2.0, the subscription cost will rise to 12.99 USD (9.99 USD for 30 days basic service and 3.00 USD for one character slot).
