Originally announced earlier this year at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play is finally heading to the United States on May 26.
Though the device has been released in Europe and you can already read IGN's UK review, Sony Ericsson had yet to announce when the first PlayStation Certified phone would be arriving stateside. Today, however, Verizon announced that it would be available starting May 26, with pre-orders beginning this Thursday, May 19 for $199.
Right out of the box, the Xperia Play will be loaded with skinned version of Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), 512MB RAM and a 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon II processor with Adreno 205 GPU. The 4-inch screen will be coupled with a 5MP rear-facing and a VGA front-facing camera.
The Xperia Play also features a slide-out mechanism, revealing a PlayStation-esque controller, equipped with the signature 4-button d-pad, 4 face buttons and a single set of shoulder buttons. Also included are touch-sensitive thumbsticks, used to replace traditional analog joysticks.
To show off the PlayStation controls, the Xperia Play will come pre-loaded with Madden NFL 11, Bruce Lee Dragon Warrior, Asphalt 6, Adrenaline, The Sims 3, Star Battalion, Crash Bandicoot and Tetris, with even more available at launch via the Android Marketplace.
Pre-orders for the Sony Xperia Play will start May 19 and will be available in stores May 26 for $199 with a two-year contract.
