VIDEO GIANT Youtube has added a face blurring feature to its video uploads.

The video sharing web site said in a post on its blog Wednesday that the feature is designed to protect the anonymity of individuals and can be used to conceal people's identities in potentially dangerous situations, such as anti-government protests.

"As citizens continue to play a critical role in supplying news and human rights footage from around the world, YouTube is committed to creating even better tools to help them," said Youtube policy associate Amanda Conway.

I hope there is an unblur feature since if a hacker login to a video maker YouTube video and face-blurs all their video, it would waste all the video makers hard work by ruining their videos with blurry faces if there is no unblurr feature...

This faceblurr could also cause YouTube to have more dislikes on video since viewers hate blurry video, and even complain if a video is not in HD, so if too many people use this feature to troll, and to hide their face while making dumb videos, I think more people just go on other video sites like Blip.tv, Dailymotion, Vimeo, etc where there are no blurry faces.

I rather people draw a black box around their head with their video editing software, wear masks like the Anonymous V for Vendetta Mask, or wear a paper bags over their head to hide their identity since I hate blurry and pixelated video.

does it directly alter the video feed? Otherwise I assume you could download it and have it unblurred?

I think it directly impacts the video file You also have an option to delete the original file which is unblurred according to the blog post at http://www.theinquir...o-video-uploads

But, I bet YouTube still will hold on to the original file for years just in case the police or government needs to see a face to capture a criminal, or find the victim which had their face blurred out to prevent the cops from finding the victim, so the police can find the criminals by interviewing the victim in the video who is too afraid to come forward on their own because of fear of revenge or further violence from his attacker.

I wonder would the blur feature also be used to blur out user uploaded porn showing private parts until it is deleted by the YouTube bots/staff for violating the terms of service.

Do you think they have the server space to save the original video?

Yes, YouTube is owned by Google, and Google owns the most server in the world. Google can always just use unused server space from other services like Gmail, Blogspot, Google Plus, Picasa, Google Drive, etc. Plus, most video people upload to YouTube are low quality few minute or less videos from cheap digital cameras or on cell phones, so the video only use a 100MB or less of space.

I think most people won't use face blur feature, and use the original video instead since most people want more views on the video to make more money from Adsense YouTube ads, so they want the video as clear as possible, so people will comment, and like their video more which can help increase the money they make by being accepted as a YouTube Ad. Partner.

I think they would not need double the space since I think few people will use this feature since it ruins the quality of the video, and can be unblurred by smart people who are very advance at Photoshop or video editing..

I think an Anonymous Mask will work better at hiding your identity since it is not possible to unblur or see through a mask on video even if you have X-Ray vision. Plus, so many people own Anonymous masks that you don't know who is behind the mask since it can be anyone who is a fan of Classic theatre, V for Vendetta the movie or Anonymous.

This is very true.
However, I definitely support Youtube doing this as it just provides further protection for people to speak freely. That's awesome that they are dong this :D
But yes, it'll be interesting to see how many people use the feature.
