A 3-year-old boy shot and wounded his father and pregnant mother with a 9 mm handgun that he pulled out of the woman's purse while searching for an iPad, police in New Mexico said on Sunday.

Both parents needed hospital treatment for non-life threatening injuries after the bullet went through his father's buttocks and into his mother's shoulder, Albuquerque Police Department Officer Simon Drobik said.

The woman, who is 8-months-pregnant, is being kept at the hospital for observation. The man has been released, said Drobik, who was first to arrive at the scene of the incident at an Albuquerque motel on Saturday afternoon.

"On the kid's side, it's a horrible accident that happened, but the parents are still culpable," Drobik said. "They should have secured the gun."

The couple could face felony negligence charges. The child does not face criminal charges, Drobik said.

The woman told police she purchased the gun the day before the incident, Drobik said. The man is not legally allowed to have a firearm because he has previously been convicted of a felony crime.

The family, including a two-year-old girl and the children's grandmother, had been living in an America's Best Value Inn for about a week with their two pit bulls when the incident occurred.

Following the shooting, the children were placed with child protective services for at least 48 hours. The dogs were taken by animal control staff.

I don't care if idiots reproduce, but don't leave guns laying around >_<

Idiots. Let's praise their good star because this could have potentially been way worse than what it was.
Keep your guns under locked boxes, at least. Geeze, the fact that the kid casually went searching for the iPad there suggest he was used to browse said back, why on earth would you have a gun in a bag you know is within reach of your kid? I am baffled and saddened by this news.

The woman should of used a gun holster/holder on her belt or concealed under a coat like the Police, Army, and Marines who use gun holders on their clothing or belt to hold their gun instead of having it in a purse since holster securely hold a gun, and allows the owner to quickly take the gun out when there is danger.

To be fair, there are countries in the world (most notably in the United Kingdom) where police don't actually carry firearms unless something really serious goes down.
Even in other parts of the world, like Canada or the US, you still may not actually see a police issued firearm because they keep them holstered most of the time.

The gun debate has no resolution, idiots and crazies will always mess it up for honest people.

My personal stand, I own guns, I love to trap and skeet shot, I don't hunt much but do once in a while. I grew up in a house where there was always a loaded gun in the house and if I even thought about messing with it my dad would have kicked the snot out of me.

Knowledge is key to safe ownership of a gun, everyone in a house with a gun in it should be well versed in how to safely be around one (my dad began teaching me to shoot at age 5, I was hunting with him at the age of 3).

I agree with this. If you are going to tote a gun around, keep it where you can make sure a small child like that doesn't use it on somebody. Shame on the adults in that situation for not exercising some common sense. I guess common sense isn't really common.

So how are they supposed to defend the civilians in case of terrorist attacks?

The police can call the SWAT Team, and Military if there is a terrorist attack.

I think most big countries in North and South America make police officers carry guns to protect themselves, and the public.

There's just no sense of responsibility and care left in this world. ay this be a reminded to everyone out there that anything can DEFINITELY happen.

Should killed the three year old lol

Hell in the world a three year old knows how to use a gun? Aim shot and damn he didn't missed. Probably born and learn from the beginning.

NUTTTTTTS Obama was crying today in a news conference.

Probably gonna see a two year old clicking the big red nuclear bomb

forgot to say. Nope nope nope nope :P

No offence here, but if you're idiotic enough to leave weapons lying around in a place that a toddler can get to them, then you can't really blame anyone but yourself when something like this happens. If this gun had been in a secure case (aka not someone's purse), this couldn't have happened.
