A quick illustration of how much content Super Smash Bros 4 could have...

The entire game of Super Smash Bros Brawl clocks in about 8GB. The size allowed on a Wii U disc is about 50GB. You could have about six whole copies of Brawl neatly fit onto a single disc.

Oh wait, how big is the content? Well a single custom level is about 5KB. I assume professional levels are bigger due to having unique code to handle stuff like special enemies, events, moving platforms, etc, but it's probably not too big.

And music is pretty small as well, practically speaking. You could get about 200 songs in a gigabyte of space (each file is between 1 and 10MB). Basically, you could theoretically get a music list with about 3 times the amount of tracks as in Brawl no problem. Heck, if you were really desperate and used nearly everything for music (they obviously won't), you could have about 10 000 different stage and character themes. But that's unlikely, no orchestra on the planet would want to record more than a thousand songs.

Seriously though, if anyone really doubts we can have a ton of characters, stages, music, items, trophies and game modes in Smash Bros 4, all I can say is that it seems logical that there's nothing stopping this from being true tech wise.

Could is the magic word. Honestly, I know they'll put in great content into the new one, but I can't help thinking it'll be "extra mile" status.

I doubt they'd use all fifty gigs. The game would never come out if they were to attempt that.

Also, how much data can be stored on a Wii disc? Guess it must be over 8GB....

50GB is a lot of Space. After a quick Google search I was only able to find one game that had over 50Gb and it's mostly a simulator.

I'm hoping if they actually finish the game exactly how they want it, they use up the rest of the filesize for more options for a custom level editor.

4.7GB single-layered, 8.54GB dual-layered, just like a normal DVD (SSBB was a dual-layered disc, obviously).

Sounds great and all, but I feel like Nintendo rarely pushes their systems to the limit when it comes to how much content a game can hold and whatnot. At least not in recent years.
SSBB took full advantage of the wii's technological capabilities. Skyward Sword also pushed the limits of the wii according to numerous sources, Nintendo being one of them. I can see Nintendo taking full advantage of the system's power and storage. This 50GB amount worries me though. There is supposed to be a 3DS counterpart to the WiiU version, but the 3DS only has a max game size of 4GB as of current (and that's on a higher-density game cart like RE: Revelations)

Worry not, the 3DS is like the Wii U's poke-walker. Just a different kind of game to level up your characters on the go, then return with them on the system to lay the smack down.

I thought they could have up to 8gb? Also, the wii must deal with higher resolution graphics..

They can go up to 8GB. 4GB is just the highest that has been used as-of-yet.
