Anyone else feeling a bit underwhelmed by Mario 3D Land in retrospect

It's a good game, and it was great fun to play the days after I bought it, but in retrospect it seems a bit disappointing compared to the other 3D Mario platformers.

I mean, Super Mario 64 kept my interest for months on end. So did Super Mario Sunshine and Galaxy. But after that, it seems like the recent 3D Mario games have kept my interest for far less time. Galaxy 2 at least kept me playing for a fairly long time (albeit not as much as Galaxy 1), but 3D Land... well, my interest in the game seems to have faded just a few months after buying it.

Maybe it's because the linearity of the game has made it so I have no real reason to replay the levels. I mean, Mario 64 and Sunshine let you try a bunch of crazy, overly stupid things and see what would happen (like, jumping off a mountain, or trying to fly to some random area, or trying out glitches and stuff), but 3D Land just has none of that. There's no real secrets to be found, no real reason to go back to any particular level because you've seen it all.

Anyone else feel the same? Honestly, I kind of hope this isn't the path Nintendo will take with all their next games.

Personally I enjoy it- Its still difficult for me to play- (because im horrible at games) but though mario 64 was good. (I never played the other two you mentioned) It didnt keep my interest long enough because it was too hard ! At least for me) Super mario land reminds me of the NES game just remade to look better. But I do have fun hopping around in it- and I can ACTUALLY beat the levels! Thats a point to me.

haha.

Dont get me wrong though the game isnt perfect. But I do enjoy it- I like the nostalgic feel to it all. Basically one of those Casual pick it up when you're feeling mario-ish for a bit. and you dont want to drag out your NES.

Well, I consider it a 2D Platformer with a twist. After all there's really no exploration, it's all very linear each level. So I got what I expected from it.

I did not care for Mario 64. There. I said it.

That aside, I think the biggest thing with Mario games is that I play them until I get completely burned out. I get every coin and every gold flag. After that, what else is there to do? With Mario Kart, I feel a similar sensation when I got all the characters. I generally get destroyed online or end up waiting so long for a group I get tired.

Now, the difference with Galaxy (2 in particular) and New Super Mario Bros Wii is the local multiplayer. I got every coin and secret in NSMBW, but I still played it again with a group of 4, 3, and 2 just for the fun of playing with my friends and trying out the different dynamics of the game. I only see one friend with Mario Kart on a regular basis, so we both get tired of playing it too.

I guess what I am trying to say is SM3DL really needed a multiplayer system and Mario Kart... well, it just felt broken and I would rather play the Wii version with several friends physically present then a few friends online.

3d land has gotten wayyy boring.... it was good for the first month or so then meh... i left it in the case for a collector item

SM3D land for me is actually very worth replaying. I don't know why, but I really enjoyed it. Just like SpoonySage said, co-op mode would be fun, maybe something like this:

Anyways there's something I'm disappointed with the game: retro stuff are more than new stuff. Too much elements were borrowed from other games, or instead, nothing new. I still remember Super Mario Advance, one of my first Mario games ever played, that had some interesting new elements, brought me a lot of memories. I doubt that little kids that played SM3D land as their first Mario game will still remember it after a long time.

It's good that the video is fake. Too much touch screen.

Yeah I was a little disappointed. It's a great fun game and all but I got bored way too early...I haven't even finished the special worlds and I'm not willing to, I just stopped playing...Dunno the game seemed like it was missing something.
