Are the Wii U's games simply crap?

Harsh, but give Malstrom some credit, he might sort of be on to something here:

http://seanmalstrom.wordpress.com/2014/02/19/most-of-wii-us-problems-are-due-to-its-terrible-games/

After all, if the games aren't selling it at all and the console itself is failing, why not assume it's because the console itself is just badly designed and the games aren't very good to begin with? Perhaps the reason Nintendo Land failed was because it was just plain terrible to begin with.

Same with all the other Wii U games that failed. Heck, perhaps the truth about the real world is that a lot of so called elitists are just idiots whose views are just wrong. Instead of saying the majority are idiot sheep, perhaps consider it as being the other way around.

But what do you think of his point? Is the Wii U failing because the games are terrible and no one wants to buy them?

Maybe if you replace "simply crap" with "not interesting enough to make people wanna buy a console".

The games that are there are solid. Mario U, 3D World. Pikmin 3, Wind Waker HD, Game & Wario, Monster Hunter, etc. They are not bad. By no means.

I mean come on, Tropical Freeze is right around the corner for the US and Europe. That game is ANYTHING but crap. I haven't even played it but I can quarantee you that much.

Just give it some time for Pete's sake!

Speaking for myself, I do believe many games on the Wii U are not as much interesting even though they're praised by Nintendo so much. That's a reason why I haven't bought a Wii U for myself, the games that are currently on the Wii U can be played on other consoles. Really the only games worth getting are just simply Super Mario games, Legend of Zelda, and Monster Hunter most games on the Wii U seem very repetitive. At first I really admired the Wii U, I thought nothing could have ever top this genius invention, and at its release it was very admirable but the games, just not so very much at all. The game pad is very nice and simply, but if you don't want to play on it you're either stuck with the Wii mote or this controller that seems to be a combination of the Xbox 360 and PlayStations 3 controller, not really much to mention because it doesn't have key features than just to play, it's just a small upgrade of being wireless and the joysticks being moved up. I'm being a bit more patient and see if any interesting games get released this year, as of now I definitely know that Sony and Microsoft have my money. Well Nintendo, it's still not too late.

The only game I've been interested in that is out for the Wii U was Pikmin 3, and when I played through that I found it to be a disappointment. They took the basic formula and added too many mundane tasks to it (I swear, if I need to find ONE missing bridge piece again…), I didn't care for the complete elimination of the C stick "mob" maneuver from the first two games as it was by far the most efficient way to get a bunch of Pikmin onto the same task, and I honestly didn't like the complete redo of the art style…the realistic world was cool, but the cartoony characters inhabiting it just made it all seem fake, and I really didn't like the Onion redo. But I digress…my point is, regardless of what Nintendo says are the "must have" games for the Wii U that're out right now, the only one I had any interest in was Pikmin 3 and it was a disappointment in my eyes…not worth the hype at all. I'm hoping that the upcoming games make up for the first lackluster year and a couple months.

The article seems a bit sensationalist. The games he lists are all solid, enjoyable game. Each and everyone one of them has earned the reviews they've gotten, if anything it seems like he's oblivious to the anti-Nintendo sentiment found in most gaming journalism. I do agree that games are a problem. The Wii U is currently in a PSP/Vita situation. It's getting games that are too familiar and don't differentiate themselves enough from prior games. What could help Nintendo (and what I think they are already doing) is to lease IPs to 3rd party studios that can breathe new life into them.

I do agree that whoever is giving the "ok" to different software needs to be fired. NES Remix 1 & 2? How about you divert that effort into your Virtual Console. Same thing for the Steel Diver FPS... how did that pitch even make it out of the meeting room?

"We need a free to play title to appease the investors, any ideas?"

"How about we make a Mario Party that's free to play... you can spend money to unlock new boards for $1.00 each... or maybe they can buy clothes and whatnot to accessorize their characters (think Mario with sunglasses and a cowboy hat)"

"No, that's a bad idea, we need something that will really get gamer's attention"

"How about a sequel to Steel Diver? We can make it a FPS"

"Brilliant! Give this man a raise and a bonus!"

Geeze even Dr. Luigi could have been Free to Play. Why not just make it a pack in game? Surely Nintendo didn't spend a lot of money making it.

Definitely agree that the games certainly aren't "total crap" and just aren't quite interesting enough to draw the crowd. But they are all solid enjoyable games. I think the main problem is the lack of variety, and the slow release schedule. I mean, think about it. All of their previous consoles have had action games with Zelda and Metroid, collect-a-thon platformers with games like Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie, first person shooters, puzzle games, racing games, strategy games, on rails shooters with Star Fox....

Of the main games heavily advertised by Nintendo for the Wii U (NSMBU and it's Luigi version, Super Mario 3D World, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, and Windwaker), four of these are platformers, and Windwaker is a HD re-release. Pikmin is a good puzzle/strategy game apparently, but kind of appeals to a niche group, as does Wario Ware. All of these games are fantastic, but there's just not enough variety. add that to the slow release schedule that pretty much gaurantees you'll be waiting months and months in between each solid game release, and it's no wonder no one wants to buy a Wii U.

It would behoove them to start putting out some darn content. Even if it's just HD remakes of some of their more popular Wii games (I'd be interested at least), they need to start slamming the market with a flood of content to get the Wii U in the spotlight and give people a reason to buy it. Weaving some remakes in between their new games and indie titles, and actually putting out good games through the VC would make the Wii U seem like a better deal...
