Political controversy surrounding TikTok began under the oversight of former US president Donald Trump. In 2020, Trump issued an executive order blocking "transactions" with TikTok parent company ByteDance. Legal battles stymied Trump's efforts, with current president Joe Biden replacing the executive order with a new one ordering a review of apps tied to foreign adversaries. TikTok has since been banned from government devices in several states, including Alabama, Maryland, Iowa, Texas, South Dakota, and Utah.

The bill from Rubio, which is named the Averting the National Threat of Internet Surveillance, Oppressive Censorship and Influence, and Algorithmic Learning by the Chinese Communist Party or "ANTI-SOCIAL CCP Act," is explicitly designed to ban TikTok and any similar social media app from ByteDance in the United States. Rubio has previously claimed that the CCP could use TikTok to spread propaganda that "support party-friendly politicians or exacerbate discord in American society."

Funny how the Democrats are all into socialism but all of a sudden don't like China's influence with communism.

On the other hand, it's brought about a lot of unhealthy behaviors and trends apart from politics.

ByteDance is known for their Chinese centric censorship, and apparently surveillance. I definitely agree with the ban on government devices, but I’m indifferent on it being banned nationwide.

My country banned ticktock a couple of years ago and it's been great. A few minor tweaks to the algorithm and china will be able to socially condition the zoomer generation into the views they want to have.

Tik Tok is a cancer so hopefully they eventually do this.

I am all for it being banned on government devices, that is understandable and makes sense due to issues it could cause.

Banning it for everyone though is not something I feel would go down well, many people use the app and some have even made a living from the app, taking it away from them would only cause them to protest which would lead to further issues.

For those who make a living on there, they should have had a plan B, as this isn’t coming out of left field overnight.

I'm not for banning as that means a few people choose if something is good or bad. I'm more for education & letting people decide. The thing with banning something is that it makes something all the MORE appealing! Folks who didn't use TikTok will start going there to see what is up.

It is spying in a very true way. Funny that other countries can buy our farmland, but banning one spy app that knows what your kids watch is another.

There was recently a bill that passed in the house that will ban tiktok, but it hasn’t been brought up to a vote with the senate yet.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The House on Wednesday passed a bill that would lead to a nationwide ban of the popular video app TikTok if its China-based owner doesn’t sell its stake, as lawmakers acted on concerns that the company’s current ownership structure is a national security threat.

The bill, passed by a vote of 352-65, now goes to the Senate, where its prospects are unclear.

TikTok, which has more than 170 million American users, is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Chinese technology firm ByteDance Ltd.

The lawmakers contend that ByteDance is beholden to the Chinese government, which could demand access to the data of TikTok’s consumers in the U.S. whenever it wants. The worry stems from a set of Chinese national security laws that compel organizations to assist with intelligence gathering.

Hopefully using it, to understand it, in order to ban it instead of someone just saying, it needs to be banned.
Nah, he’s using it for his campaign to appeal to the demographic that uses the platform. He also says he’s safe from Chinese spying, as he only uses TikTok on an encrypted government system.
