TL;DR: Blizzard announced Overwatch Rush, a standalone, top-down hero shooter built specifically for mobile by a separate internal team (not a scaled-down port), while Team 4 continues to support the main Overwatch. Early footage shows 5v5 matches with dual-sided touch controls and familiar heroes/maps; regional tests are planned, no release date yet, and player feedback will inform development.

Blizzard Announces

Blizzard Entertainment has announced Overwatch Rush, a new top-down hero shooter developed specifically for mobile devices. The company describes the project as an entirely new game set within the Overwatch universe rather than a port of its existing PC and console title.

The announcement follows renewed activity around the core Overwatch franchise, which recently underwent updates including new heroes, interface changes, and revised storytelling elements. Blizzard confirmed that development of Overwatch Rush will not affect ongoing support for the primary Overwatch experience.

Separate Development Team Confirmed

According to Blizzard, Overwatch Rush is being developed by a dedicated internal team distinct from “Team 4,” the group responsible for the main Overwatch title. The studio stated that the new team brings significant mobile development experience, while Team 4 remains focused on delivering seasonal content and updates for PC and console players.

Blizzard emphasized that the mobile project is designed from the ground up for handheld platforms. The company reiterated that the game is not a scaled-down adaptation but a standalone experience tailored to mobile play.

Gameplay and Early Preview Details

A brief early-development preview video has been released, offering a first look at gameplay. The footage shows a top-down camera perspective featuring recognizable heroes such as Mercy, Reinhardt, and Tracer competing on the Busan map, originally introduced in the main Overwatch title.

On-screen controls displayed in the preview suggest a dual-sided touch interface. Character movement appears to be controlled on the left side of the screen, while primary attacks and abilities are positioned on the right. The gameplay retains the series’ team-based combat structure, with what appears to be 5v5 matches presented at a pace adapted for mobile devices.

Blizzard has not yet confirmed a release date.

Testing Plans and Ongoing Development

The company announced plans to begin testing Overwatch Rush in select countries and regions. Specific territories and timelines have not been disclosed. Blizzard directed interested players to its official Discord server for future updates and testing information.

In its development update, the studio acknowledged that work on the title is still in progress and indicated that player feedback will play a role in shaping future development phases. Blizzard stated that the broader goal of the project is to expand the Overwatch universe across additional platforms.

Further updates, including details on testing phases and potential release windows, are expected at a later date.
