In the past, whenever Square Enix released a new Final Fantasy, things were a-okay. Yet, in 2010 the Tokyo-based game maker released two, and things are anything but.

In late December 2009, Square Enix launched Final Fantasy XIII in Japan, and the title hit the West in 2010. The game is the fastest selling title in the company's history, moving over 5 million copies.

In fall 2010, Square Enix released its new online title Final Fantasy XIV. The game seemed undercooked, the reaction was negative and the release was bungled, eventually leading to apologies and the game's designers getting the boot.

But even the mighty Final Fantasy cannot save Square Enix, with the company seeing a 76 percent dip in profits during the year. The reason for the hemorrhaging was due in part to high value of the Japanese yen as well as the number of big titles released in the previous calendar year (Dragon Quest IX and FFXIII). It was also due to how all games performed and their short shelf life, not to mention things like the delay of Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

"Consumers are getting more selective, and there's a big difference between games that sell and games that don't," said Square Enix honcho Yoichi Wada, adding that the game maker is rallying itself to make titles that consumers want to get. So no Mind Jack 2, then?

Later this year, Square Enix is releasing a new Final Fantasy game, Final Fantasy XIII-2. But no doubt, Square Enix (and players) are thinking that the eagerly anticipated Final Fantasy Versus XIII cannot come soon enough.

only way FF can save them if they go back to the way FF was made during the 6-9 days.

Versus definitely can. Looks like a 3D version of everything before X. I really liked X though; amazing. Never played XI, XII was meh, XIII was awesome. I and II were pioneers, III wasn't too great, but was fun, IV was by far the best Final Fantasy, and third best RPG, and my third favorite game (lol), V-VI were great too, though VI didn't catch my attention until last year, VII-IX were just wow. I liked VIII a lot, but others didn't seem to agree; don't know why though. :/

No, The final fantasy franchise has been going downhill ever since Hironobu Sakaguchi left Square Enix. The only way Final Fantasy can be saved is if Sakaguchi were to return. Which is unlikely.

I agree with this, but there is hope someone like him joins SE and brings FF back up to it's glorious glory.

Who is this? The original writer or something? Because the stories for these games are good; Tetsuya is a kick ass producer, writer, designer.

agreed. I mean the games I've liked up until 12 and then just the constant spin-offs and games like 13 that did everything the fans of the series didn't want hasn't been helping the series. Versus looks good, but I don't know if it will necessarily "save" the series

And XV won't be due for at least 2014. They have too many projects at the moment, and some secret ones too probably (one being XV probably!).

hard to say where the XV project is currently, but it does seem like were going to be dealing with FF XIII for awhile as well as the fail XIV.

XIV won't be a fail for PS3 because they are completely redoing it. Versus is going to kick ass, and XIII-2 looks AMAZING.

At the moment, just in game, but they will probably make it for 3D TV's, like recent PS3 exclusives, and a few multiplatforms.
