An App could also be useful for translations since Asian uses picture based characters instead of numbers like Europeans and Americans, and for the illiterates, blind, vision impaired who can't read the date, and have the date read out loud for them with text to speech option.
I read an article about a University making Disposable Dynamic Displays With Electronic Ink on Real Paper which are cheap enough to throw away with the magazine or newspaper, so I think if they put an animated gif in the paper that chage date formats every 30 seconds this problem can be solved.
But, sadly, I feel these paper display may be used for embedding annoying advertisements which flash ads at readers.
