Cobra Kai is genuinely some of the best TV I've ever seen and it's hard to believe a show based on a 40 year old IP could achieve what Cobra Kai did. I's a karate soap opera that debuted on YouTube Red and yet, Cobra Kai is still entertaining, action packed, hilarious, heartfelt, and it stays true to the source material while respecting the legacy characters at the same time. Every single important character from the original Karate Kid trilogy reprises their role in the show and are given arcs and dimensions that flesh out their characters. I've heard people call this show "Power Rangers for adults" and truer words have never been spoken.
These days, it's hard to find a show like Cobra Kai that still proudly upholds good moral principles like discipline, fatherhood, bravery and second chances. Johnny Lawrence (the main character)'s story taught me that it's never too late for a second strike at life, even if you think your best days are behind you, even if you're holding onto deep hurt or if you've made grave mistakes. Cobra Kai is special that way.
This karate soap opera is famous for being "way better than it ever deserves to be" for a reason and it's because the creators (Jon, Josh, & Hayden) were big fans of The Karate Kid. If not for their devotion to extend and enrich the Karate Kid saga, this series wouldn't have survived this long, especially not through the cancellation of YouTube Red, the pandemic and the Writer's Strike. I'm proud to call Cobra Kai my favourite show of all time. It's a true love letter to a bygone era and a beloved 80s trilogy. There's no other show like it imo.
