It's one of the earliest Jet Fighters, Transonic similar to the Phantom F-4. Both are quite capable close range dogfighters
but Phantom has longer tactical range and longer missile range the AIM-7 Sparrow, Hunter can only carry AIM-9 Sidewinders so the Phantom can fire its sparrow first forcing the Hunter to go defensive early. And Phantom can carry more types of Air to Ground Armaments. However the first Phantom version had no Guns and AIM-7 Sparrow had difficulties locking targets flying over/close to terrains. And thus the early Phantoms did not perform well enough in Air to Air combat during the Vietnam war causing them to fix it, making Guns mandatory again for Fighters and making new AIM-7 Sparrow with much better target tracking systems. The Hunter has 4 much slower firing but more powerful 30mm ADEN Gun like Russian Fighters, Phantom II has one 20mm M61 Vulcan Cannon/Gun faster firing but less powerful. the 20mm cannon is easier to hit targets though it packs less punch it's like star wars X-wing's Laser guns while the ADEN is like Y-wing's Laser Cannons lol
