Deciding on what to do in multiplayer games with friends

When you log into a multiplayer game to play with friends, what is your usual process for picking what activities to do together, especially if you do not play on a daily or frequent basis?

Just jump in on the first thing that sounds fun and is free.

If I really want to play a certain game I know me and my mutuals have, then I tell them outright at the time I'm ready. Then play single-player if I am waiting or they decide they don't have time.
