And for those who did... is it any good?

Just wondering whether people here like the game or not, and whether it'd ever be a good idea for me to buy it.

Picking it up at some point- I wanted to get it right away since I'd been looking forward to it, but with the onslaught of games this year it'll just have to wait!

No. Imo, the game looks god awful. I mean a toad platformer would've been a cool idea, but not this. It's mostly a puzzle game, which isn't a bad thing per say, I personally don't like pure puzzle games unless it's like Tetris or that one game like Pokemon Puzzle League. Also Captain Toad can't jump, which is kind of dumb since Toad jumped in Mario 2 and I'm pretty sure I've seen Toads jump before. The lack of jumping just takes appeal way from the game since it's technically a Mario game. I mean I guess people could say the same about Luigi's Mansion since Luigi is known for jumping better than Mario, but at least Luigi's Mansion was a fun idea and a fun game to play.

Also I hate how it's just a way to rehash Super Mario Galaxy without calling it Super Mario Galaxy. I'm personally sick of the Galaxy games and they really need to do something else. So I'm hoping Captain Toad is just some kind of last hurrah of Mario Galaxy before making a new Mario game altogether.

I picked up the game two days ago. I really got a chance to play it yesterday.

The game is very charming. Each level is like a giant diorama. There is a lot of graphical detail and nice finishing touches in each level. The game is absolutely beautiful. The beginning puzzles are very easy, but the game does become challenging. The game has a cute little story to it that I wont ruin. However, it's actually three different stories. You access the levels by turning the pages of a book. There are three books, each with a different story. You recieve and additional book for having a SM3DW save. These bonus levels can only be accessed by having a number of diamonds. You collect diamonds in the main story.

In-game, you can only move around, run, and rotate the camera. There are powerups like the pickaxe and the cherry from SM3DW. There are features in the level that require use of the touchscreen or microphone. Certain platforms require you to blow into the mic. Other parts of the level might require you to turn a wheel using the touchscreen to change features of the map, or touch the screen to move platforms. Each level has a powerstar which is required to beat the level. There are three diamonds that are collectables, similar to the gold coins in SM3DL or the green stars in SM3DW. Beyond the collectable, there are challenges for each level. Some of which include not taking damage, beating a level by tapping the screen three times, or not getting seen by shyguys.

I haven't beaten the game yet, but there is over seventy levels if I remember from what I've read. For $40.00 USD this game is absolutely worth the money. There's a lot of content that has a lot of replayability. Each level keeps track of the amount of coins you collect. Each level has challenges and three collectables. There's a lot to do. I've found myself replaying levels to see if I can get it done better, faster, and complete the challenges. The game is absolutely beautiful too, which makes the slow pace enjoyable. I love it!
