Or do you wait until there's some games you actually like on it first? Personally, I tend to wait unless there's an absolutely fantastic launch title that I just have to have immediately, a situation which has become increasingly rare with Nintendo's later systems.

So what do you do?
I am the same as you. I typically try to wait at least a year after the console has come out so I can be certain all bugs are worked out of it first (As every console has had problems since the PS2). I also want there to be an amazing title I simple KNOW I will enjoy. For the Wii U it would be Bayonetta 2 that intrigues me but buying the console for one game won't be a wise investment.
It depends for me my 360 i got at launch i think that was the last console/handheld i got at launch. As for the 3ds im glad i waited lol i really never wanted one till i saw trailer for X/Y then i got the XL 3ds (glad i waited) now im starting to see how amazing the 3ds is. The only thing I get on launch now is apple products (apple zombie here). lol
it is mostly wise to wait. some times when you just buy something you wish you haddent as a few months later there are recals even fires! with the handheld systems i am worried about buying them EVER time becuz it seems 9 mounths later they have another brain child BIGGER BETTER MORE GAMES... so yea the reason is safty and games.. and trying not to spend 10000 bucks on the same system 3 times over lol
Only System I ever bought on launch day was the GCN and even that one was a week before launch dumb K-mart employees don't know jack about release days. XD

Which reminds me... I think that is one thing Nintendo has over the other consoles for me; I run out to get Zelda versions of consoles whenever I can. Tried like heck to get the Zelda 3DS but SOMEBODY *cough* TigressStar *cough* had to get sick and need a hospital visit and penicillin the day I coulda gotten it at discount price. *sigh*
Only system I've ever gotten at release time was the Gamecube, and only by virtue of my father having stayed up till like 3AM to snipe on off Amazon I think it was. It came with a big bundle of titles, like Waverace, Luigi's Mansion, Melee, Star Wars Rogue Squadron as well as all the guidebooks for the games. Best. Christmas. EVER. But even that wasn't on the day it released but a couple weeks later.
As for other systems I've always gotten to them late, either because it was my parents doing the buying and I was a kid who had no idea about the systems themselves, or an adult who has to get the money for it themselves and wants to wait until there are games they want first! I do wish I'd gotten the 3DS at release though, as I would have liked to get Yoshi's Island for it from the Ambassador's Program. I keep hoping they'll finally put it out on the Eshop so I can give them my money!

I've never bought a system on launch day. However I bought a Wii U a week or two after it came out and it had hardly any games, so kind of, but not really.
The only console I've ever purchased on launch was the 3DS. I only bought it then because I figured it was about time to buy a new DS model; my phat always worked fine, so I never bought a lite or DSi. For all the other systems I've gotten, I've gotten them anywhere from a few months (in the case of the WiiU) to 5 years after (PS2).
Generally speaking, I don't really see a point in buying a system right away because the launch line-up often ends up being pretty lackluster. But I guess each to their own. There was a guy in Manhattan who waited outside of the Nintendo World Store for the WiiU launch for a entire month prior :X
The 3DS is probably going to be the last console I buy on launch. I rarely ever use it. Its actually probably the last Nintendo console i'l get but who knows.
Nothing wrong with the systems, it's just that i'm generally on my computer using steam and such. That and homework.
