Do you, or did you, ever buy pre-owned games?

I know that back in the early days of the SNES and N64 I was given, and bought, a few pre-owned games just because they were a bit cheaper. It was annoying when I was given pre-owned games however, because generally there was no instruction booklet, and the games themselves didn't have in-game tutorials at the time, so I had to figure everything out for myself.

When I actually got the book with the game, as well as getting the game in it's actual box (I bought Mario Party 3 without the box or booklet, but I just had to have the game; I got it a few years ago, and that was the only copy floating around that wasn't crazy expensive) it's generally pretty good.

So what are your thoughts on pre-owned games? Do you find the savings to be minimal (nowadays, I kind of do find the difference minimal, but sometimes you can find a good bargain on old, pre-owned games) or would you rather have a brand new copy rather than some tattered old thing? Same for consoles as well, when would you ever purchase a pre-owned console? I haven't bought a pre-owned console myself, as I always want one straight from the box in case something crazy happens the thing explodes, so I've hopefully still got some warranty.

PRE-OWNED GAMES ARE THE DEVIL!

Goodness, No way in hell am I ever buying pre-owned anything anymore. I'll tell ya what happened.

Alrighty, It was 2 Christmas's ago, I went to Gamestop, got 3 games, 2 didn't work, went back two days later(because I got them on a saturday and the store was closed sunday), got those 2 replaced, 1 with the same, one with something else, well the one that was the same did not work, so I went back in the next day again, and so forth this continues for another 4 days, until Finally I got a copy that worked.

Well, that's my story.

OH! Is that around the time when you got Animal Crossing for Gamecube? I think I remember that story, actually! That was pretty ridiculous though, you shouldn't had to have gone through all that.

And same here Porkman, I got a few Gamecube games as well that were pre-owned.

Yes, Animal crossing was one of the 3.

I have and still do buy pre-owned games. Most of the time they do work for me too (they always seem to work perfectly for the DS or GBA) but there are the games on discs that I have to buy since its the only way to get the game but I hate them sometimes...

...Like about a year and a half ago, I bought Sonic Adventure DX for the Gamecube at GameTrader's. Guess what? Its an American disc, so when I got home and the disc didn't play and I had a closer look, I had to call them and order a freeloader. At LEAST two weeks passed before I got the darn thing and was finally able to play the game.

Crash Tag Team Racing on my PSP is pre-owned. The game works ok until it tries to load something, and than it freezes quite badly at some points, up to 2 minutes or more of loading times forcing me to go back to the main menu. It also causes my PSP to make very loud noises, like the PSP is trying to read the disc but failing. With my other games it doesn't make much noise but with this one game it certainly is noticeable, you don't need to focus on the noise to hear it. Oddly enough, the other games I have, including two more pre-owned games, work fine.

Than there's Crash Team Racing for the PS1. Sometimes it loads and other times it doesn't, luckily a quick clean solves the problem. Once the game actually boots up its completely fine and has no other issues.

I don't really like getting pre-owned discs and most times when I get home I grab the console and check if it's working right away. If it doesn't work/load/freezes for some reason I take it out and search for scratches. If cleaning the disc doesn't solve the problem it goes right back.

I feel like pre-owned is the way to go! I'd rather have extra money to spend in my food budget than waste on my video game budget so I will generally buy pre-owned games. I've actually never had a bad experience with buying pre-owned games, they have all worked fine and other than one disc that has a few scratches, which I took care of when I got it home with my Disc Doctor, it ended up working fine. I like buying pre-owned because I save boatloads of cash on game titles and with the PowerUp Rewards card (formerly the Edge card) from GameStop--you get some extra dollars/cents shaved off your bill at the register on pre-owned lovelies. :]

I've bought some used games because I never had enough money to buy a new game, typically my brother and I would split the cost of games we wanted. Since then, I've grown up and gotten a job, but I still try to convince my brother to split the cost with me on games that we both want.

I'm all for pre-owned stuff so long it's in good condition, especially with how expensive games are these days. Sixty dollars for a new 360 game? Geez.

So some years ago.... late 90s maybe, we had Goldeneye (I think you'd have to be pretty retarded to not realise I'm talking about the N64 version, and not the Wii version, after I said late 90s

) --- well it was my brothers to be exact. We (or he.... let's just say we) got up to (and including) the 10th stage, i.e. Statue, and apparently we sucked, and couldn't get past (I can't remember exactly what it was), so we rented another copy from our now-nonexistent Blockbuster store, for 2 nights (or was it 3, or 5... well, whatever), and this game had everything complete.. well, it had Egyptian Temple available, anyhow, and I think the 007 difficulty (which I believe is the 4th, after 00 Agent, Secret Agent and Agent, going down towards "Easy")... so here's what we did. We er.... "accidentally" gave our version back and er.... again, "accidentally" kept that one. What? No one will tell the difference? *here's knock* OH SHOOT! QUICK HIDE!

I don't think I've ever had a problem with used games. Plenty of my games are used, and they work fine.

Also, if you want any slightly older games, you kinda have no choice but to get them used.

to me it all really depends on avaliabilty and my money situation....ill only buy preowned if they dont have it brand new or if i dont have enuff money for it at the time. i do prefer buying them brand new tho, i really hate when id get a game without the booklet. id actually rather just not buy the game, if it doesnt bring the book tbh.

I buy just about every game I get new. If you watch for sales you can usually get new games for cheaper than GameStop's used price. You also don't have to deal with a sticky case. Plus, when 70% of your gaming is done on PC, you can't really buy things used.

That's a really nice story there, what with swapping a completed version with your actual purchased version. Indeed, I'm kind of curious to whether anyone else did this when they got stuck at a video game level/mission.

I get most games these days used(aside from the 3DS games now), because I'm not paying $60 for a game. Usually you can get games used for $20-$30 a few months after it releases here.
