Updating video card drivers for faster PC gaming performance can be risky since a bad video card update can break Windows, or cause file corruption if the driver cause Windows to randomly reboot when you are working on a file like your homework, or video files on a video editor.

depends on the PC's hardware and specs, naturally it be dangerous to do but people love to overclock.

I think most video card drivers don't overclock the video chip's speed settings.

Video card driver updates mainly fixes old problems which make games run slowly, and other problems like computer crashes cause by video card driver problems.

But, a poorly made video card driver can add more new problems like random crashes if the driver software is not compatible with your PC, and software on your PC.

The best way to be sure is check the compatibility. Basically you have to check the motherboards allowable hardware versions. Along with this is the socket type compatibility. The highest VGA is basically recommended for any set up, but as i said it all depends on how much can your motherboard take.
