Does New Super Luigi U happen before Luigi's Mansion 2?

Because as someone else said online, it actually makes quite a bit of sense:

Think about it... Why isn't Mario in NSLU? Because he was captured by King Boo when he went off to Evershade Valley! After all, E Gadd said he called on someone else before Luigi, and most people think it's likely said individual was Mario himself! Presumably he left his hat on the Peach's Castle table just before this point too.

But because Luigi was on this quest to save Peach at the time (perhaps during the time period/cut between the lab getting wrecked and Luigi being shown at home), by the time he returned, Mario had just been captured (unbeknown to E Gadd) and the plot was in full swing.

So what do you think? Is it possible New Super Luigi U is a sort of prequel to Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon?

There is but one hole in your theory, Nin! If Mario left his hat at Peach's castle, how could he be wearing it in Luigi's Mansion 2? I've solved the mystery... it's not a prequel.

If he left his hat in that random room in Luigi's Mansion 1, how can he still be wearing it when trapped in the painting/the ending?

Easy, he carries two hats.

Maybe the hat in NSLU is actually the Mario power up for Yoshi from SM64DS. I'm still against the idea it's a prequel...

That's a neat theory. What if he does carry two hats, maybe more. He has gone through a lot over the years. Saving the princess from World 8 many times. I'm sure he's lost plenty of hats there.
