Does the way you get legendary Pokemon in most games make the game too easy?

When I think about it, the whole way you get a uber powerful legendary Pokemon just before the elite four kind of takes much of the challenge away from the finale.

Sure, they're not invincible and you can lose to your opponents if you try taking on literally everything with just one Pokemon, but you're given a Pokemon like Ho-oh/Lugia/Groudon/Kyogre/Deoxys/Dialga/Palkia/Girantina etc that can't really be matched by any normal monster in the game.

They're also pretty good 'crutch' characters for anyone who forgot to level up an actual team too, but part of me thinks giving them away right before the supposedly most difficult part of the game might be making it a little too easy, right?

See, I never use legendary pokemon when facing the elite four.

I think that yes, they are crutches for player who are younger and less skilled, but they are rarely "given away". Many involve long, drawn out battles as you throw ball after ball. These encounters are almost always the longest of any Pokemon game and, in the case of the running legendaries, by far the most frustrating (LOL, my Haunter used Mean Look).

I used them back in the day only when I needed to level up other things for a team in a hurry. But otherwise, they make good crutches for less skilled players.

In general I don't use legendaries. In fact I think they're too overpowered. But I do use them on occasion

One of my friends used a Lv100 DW Arceus to blast through the game...

Right? I'd never use them to do any real challenges in the game though

This is me, haha. I remember the frustration of trying to catch some. Although now a few are given away, while the rest are still in-game (not sure how good Victini or Darkrai were but they were both given away [was Darkrai even catchable in the game?]).

After ball after ball... And then you run out of Ultra Balls, and toss ONE POKE BALL.... And you catch it. Somehow it evaded the Ultra Balls and got caught by a standard Poke Ball.

Yes, some Pokemon give you a golden oppurtunity to catch them right before the battle with the Elite Four. Sometimes I use my legendaries (especially if I feel like destroying a few Trainers and practically crushing a few dreams) and sometimes I don't. Normally I like one on my party as an extreme back-up, which is what Mewtwo is for on Pokemon White.

Darkrai was catchable through a Platinum event that would bring you to his island. After catching him you would be treated to the one and only time a narrator has had to say something in the game. Some theorize that Arceus is the one who speaks to you here.

I never experienced the event so I wouldn't know but very fascinating

Oh yeah, that's right, it was an item or something that was given away, not the Pokemon itself. I keep forgetting half of it. So what (if any) Pokemon were just given away for the heck of it? I'm guessing past generation ones like Mewtwo maybe?

I think Metwo is being distrubuted now..

My use of Legendaries has decreased over the years. Early on I admit to using my Legendary to blaze through the Elite 4, although even my first game I relied on my Swampert even more than Kyogre. Nowadays I only use Legendaries for one of three things. Grinding exp off the Elite 4 (Exp. share and a level 100 legendary makes this a bit easier), catching other Legendaries, and battling my friend who is adamant that Legendaries are not slightly cheap, and should be used as much as possible.
