Kirby's Epic Yarn, set for release here on October 17, could end up being the best Kirby game ever. At the very least, nothing can top the yarn theme in cuteness!

But here's a big surprise. Kirby's Epic Yarn originally wasn't a Kirby game. The game started development at developer Good Feel (Wario Land Shake) as a totally original title. It had the yarn themed world, but it starred a main character named "Fluff."

The switch to a Kirby game came in Summer 2009. As detailed by producer Etsunobu Ebisu in the Japanese version of the game's Iwata Asks column, at the time the development staff was having some difficulty getting an overall vision in place for the game. Having won approval from Nintendo to develop the project, they'd spent three months making a prototype, but the end result wasn't all that fun.

Nintendo stepped up and asked if they'd like to turn it into a Kirby game. Ebisu had some reservations at first, as he didn't want the character work of the game's designers to go to waste, but after putting Kirby in as a test, he was sold.

The Iwata Asks column is full of additional revelations about Kirby's Epic Yarn, as well as some insight into the Kirby character himself. Nintendo usually puts up full translations of the Iwata Asks columns, so be on the lookout at the official Nintendo site.
