More free stuff for Nintendo fanatics over in Japan. Nintendo Japan will be distributing free Wiimote covers to Wii owners. As you can see in the pictures that we've uploaded, the cover wraps around your Wiimote and makes it look like a little limbless baby all bundled up for the bitter winter cold.
The reason for Nintendo's generosity is explained at the company's web page. Nintendo hopes that by using the cover, players will be able to get a better grip on the controller, helping to prevent accidents. The cover also provides cushioning in case the Wiimote falls, or in case you happen to swing the controller at someone's head.
Best of all, getting the cover is remarkably easy for those in Japan. Simply fill out a form with your address and Wii serial number, check a box if you have Wii Play (which includes an extra Wiimote) and specify the number of extra Wiimotes you have on top of that. We're not exactly sure, but we seem to have 76 covers on the way.
The covers will be delivered starting in mid-October. Also around that time, Nintendo will begin including covers with the Wii system, Wii Play and separate Wiimote peripherals.
We'll let you know if the Wiimote experience changes significantly when playing with protection.
