Gamestop Exclusive 3DSXL a little late in the 'game'?

So, if you have no clue as to what I am talking about, I am referring to this:

I received this advertisement in my e-mail days ago (but the site was down so I was unable to post, obviously) and my immediate reaction was "why?" With the updated system (New 3DS) coming out isn't it a bit late for poorly-placed marketing ploys such as this one? I mean, the look would have intrigued me a year and a half ago without a doubt; but directly after announcing a new version of the 3DS with updated graphics and more games exclusive to it?

so, am I the only one who feels this marketting gimmeck is VERY poorly timed and a huge waste of whatever it cost to design, box, ship, and manufacture?

Now! If they made that for the New 3DS coming out... THAT would be sexy!
 
Most likely to please people who don't have interest in the New 3DS. Plus the New 3DS doesn't come out for a while anyway and Nintendo knows that there are crazy people who own 3DS's who are willing to either trade in their current 3DS or go out an buy an exclusive even though they already have one, or to make the design appealing to those who want a 3DS and doesn't own it and also doesn't have interest in the New 3DS.
 
I really like the NES one, and would have at least considered getting one sometime in the past... But I already upgraded to a limited edition console when the Yoshi console came out.

I REALLY wish Nintendo would have gone the same route as their new system and made faceplates for them. New systems aren't as likely to sell in the west as they do in Japan, but I think people would actually snap up faceplates. I'm extremely disappointed tat the faceplates their offering though are only available with the smaller New 3DS model. I'm just waiting and hoping they add it in later, because it's really lame that because I want a bigger screen, I can't customize my system. I mean- why NOT have the feature?
 
I didn't grow up with an NES so even if I didn't have a 3DS I wouldn't be all that interested.
I grew up with the Gameboy color. ^^

Btw: How come they don't make handhelds with transparent plastic anymore? :/

Actually, at least over in Europe, they did announce transparent plastic limited edition 2DS's just yesterday! http://www.neoseeker.com/news/26028-nintendo-of-europe-announces-clear-nintendo-2ds-models-standalone-or-bundled-with-pokemon/ They look kinda neat too!

When I saw the transparent 2DS's, my inner 9 year old was going crazy wanting to buy it. haha.

I absolutely love the look of them! I'd pick it up if available in NA.
