Starting June 24, Google will consolidate reviews of movies, TV shows, books, albums, and games under a single profile page for each user, according to a recent email. These profiles will be searchable through Google, potentially exposing users' preferences and dislikes.
Google initially introduced movie reviews for users in India in 2017, gradually expanding the feature worldwide. Last year, Google confirmed to TechCrunch that it had made review profiles public and searchable in certain regions, beginning with the U.S. and India. Now, the company is extending this feature globally.
This update allows users to view all reviews posted by any profile. Google has informed TechCrunch that a toggle to make profiles private is available, although this feature was only introduced last week, as noted by SEO consultant Gagan Ghotra and TechCrunch.
A Google spokesperson explained to TechCrunch, "Profiles make it easier for people to see and manage their reviews of things like movies and TV shows in one place and make reviews more helpful for others. These reviews were already public, and we provide people with control to make their profile private or delete it altogether, along with options to privately edit or delete their reviews."
By default, all profiles are public. Consequently, users unaware of their profile page or who missed Google’s email notifications (which might have landed in spam or updates folders) will have their profiles visible to everyone.
