I was interested in this game's story, but its been so long and its media is all over the place.

I have the game and just beat it. I must say despite all the drama with Platinum leaving the project and the constant delays, the games is 1000% worth it. If this is cultivated correctly, this can easily become a franchise a tier below final fantasy

I have to agree with the assessment here. The story is nothing we haven't seen before. But that gameplay depth is extreme (in a good way)
