There's both good news and bad news for fans of the .hack series. This week's Famitsu has first details on an all new PSP entry in the series, .hack//Link. That's the good news. The bad news is that the magazine confirms that Link will be the series' final game.

In case you're unfamiliar with the Bandai Namco and CyberConnect2 RPG series, here's a short refresher. .hack is a franchise that spans games, novels, manga, and anime. Games include four .hack// PS2 titles, three .hack//G.U. PS2 titles, and the online .hack//fragment.

All entries take place in a virtual network world known as The World. Link is no different, except the world has advanced over ten years from the original .hack and is now known as The World R:X (the "R" stands for "Revision").

In Link, Players take control of Tokio Kuryu, a second year junior-high student. Presented through manga-style visuals, the game's story promises to clear up the mysteries from past entries. Over 100 characters from past .hack games, anime, manga, and books will make an appearance.

Gameplay promises to retain the basics of past titles, with players facing off in battle against enemies as they explore dungeons. The difference here is that you move around in a party of two, with the CPU-controlling the other character. The game will include 33 such CPU-controlled characters.

Another change includes a more action-heavy combat system. While specifics haven't been revealed, your movement and the cut-in animation sequences during combat are said to be somewhat like a fighting game. The game does promise a simple control scheme, though, for those who aren't too good with action games.

.hack//Link is currently without a final release date, but is listed by Famitsu as being 50% complete.

For those who've been keeping up with the Japanese news scene, Link is almost assuredly the mystery CyberConnect2 title that was first hinted at last week. Expect further details (and hopefully screenshots!) to hit the web this Friday when the developer's countdown website reaches 0.
