Has Adding lots of RAM to PC became a gimmick/trick people into buying slower PCs + tech?

I think some computer makers sometimes install 8GB or more RAM to try to sell their slower computers with a slower Intel Celeron or Core i3 to less tech savvy users who may more likely buy a computer with 8GB of RAM instead of 4GB of RAM.

RAM does not cost much money these days where you can buy 8GB of DDR3 RAM for $30 or less on eBay, Amazon, and other places, so adding 8GB of RAM to a cheap PC will not cost a lot.

There are some operating systems like Chrome OS, Windows 10 Home, Windows 7 Basic, and Linux which come with cheap PCs which rarely use more than 2GB of RAM under normal usage, so the 8GB of RAM maybe less useful, and a faster CPU like a Intel Core i5 and fast SSD or hybrid SSD hard drive would be more useful.

I'm still getting people coming in wanting more than 10 GB amount of RAM despite the PC's specs. There must be something floating around I'm not seeing.

I think some people are still reading old online advice on tech forum which used to say buy as much RAM you can afford, and your PC will be faster.

Having a lot of RAM can also be a status symbol to show off how much money and wealth you have, so richer PC users may buy high spec fast PCs to show off how rich they are.
