Has anybody had any issue with their PS4 overheating?

My PS4 has luckily been flawless since I bought it, but I was over at a friend's house the other day and he was showing me how his system overheats if he leaves it on for more than 2 hours at a time.  The bottom section gets really hot and then ten minutes later there's an error message saying to reset.  He's going to send it in for replacement soon.

Does anybody know if this is normal, and if there's anything that can be done to prevent it?  I hate dealing with console repairs.

I've had that problem before. But you have to remember, this IS the summer. This is about the time when MANY game systems conk out, even the most sturdy of them.

That happened to mine once too. But it was my fault. I was running it in a room with little ventilation or air flow. Tell your friend to move the system. When I did that, I stopped getting the error.

That error is normal. Well, not something you "want" to see, but it's normal. It's the system trying to preserve itself from the heat. In the summer months you have to do everything you can to keep your system running cool. Open the windows or turn on the A/C.

Make sure the area around the PS4 isn't cluttered so the air vents can have room to breath, etc.

He can only play 2 hours at a time? Geez, gaming sessions on average are like 4 hours at least. If this has only just started happening, do what the above people said. If this has been happening in cooler months of the year, then you have a problem.

The heat is getting to it, open windows, turn on AC or put a fan blowing at it. If it's not external heat (which it might be, as others mentioned it IS the summer) then maybe the fans have a lot of dust or hair (very possible if he has pets). If it's not external heat and the fans are clean and working fine, then MAYBE something IS busted and he should get it checked.

I've never been affected by the problem myself but I think it is quite common. What doesn't help is that many will have their console next to or even on top of other electrical equipment.

Also keeping a console in a cabinet is another way of intensifying the external heat of the system.

Location is a big issue with the next gen consoles, so I've made sure both mine are in a place that's well ventilated, and I've even bought a USB fan for the consoles to sit on.

How did your friend have the PS4? location could be the issue.

Not that I'm aware of, no. Well, mine hasn't overheated until now, but just like in your cases, a friend of mine has acquired a console which is the pure hell on Earth, haha. Regardless of it being used in winter, spring or summer, it's always at the same temperature, and he doesn't stand it anymore. I've always told him that it can be due to it being a faulty device, but he decided to put it in service only two weeks ago, more than a year after he bought it. Lucky him it was still in warranty, haha. He got it replaced and since then he hasn't had any further complain.

Now, regarding your issue, as I stated before with the case of my friend, I definitely do not think this is normal. Send it for replacement, this is the best recourse. Assuming it's still in the warranty time, of course.

No, have never experienced this problem. I always ensure that the console is well positioned and that there's nothing that could possibly restrict air-flow. If you happen to live in a dusty environment, it's best to blow on those air vents with compressed air. Keep those air vents clean at all times and you should never have to experience this problem. Same applies to other electronics and of course laptops.

I have never faced any of these problems on the Playstation 4 console the ventilation should be real good in the room, and keep a cloth or board underneath it so it does not heat up. Sometimes it could happen due to the weather, and need to keep an eye on the console heating as if it get's too hot then it will be damaged. The repair could cost more as the parts may cost more to buy and opening the insides may take time and also, the labor cost can be higher since the Playstation is a newer version and improved as well.
