What is it about horror that makes us feel so good? Whether its horror films, true crime documentaries, Stephen King books or horror games (more on them soon), there are plenty of people who will seek out the thrill that horror culture offers.

I recently visited the newest Universal Studios theme park in Orlando, Epic Universe. In Epic, there is a land - Dark Universe - which is entirely themed around horror - old school and new school horror. Monsters including The Creature from the Black Lagoon, Dracula, Frankenstein and Wolf Man are front and centre. Epic Universe caters to both children and adults so the fact that Universal dedicated such a large part of their newest theme park to horror which tells its own story.

Interestingly enough, scientists say that mild scares can help foster lasting psychological resilience so mild horror can be seen as healthy for the mind. Of course, we are the masters of all things gaming here at Gaming Latest so we thought we would take a look at some of the best current and upcoming horror games.

Project Songbird

Due to release at the end of this month (March) Project Songbird is available to be played in a sort of demo mode right now which the creators call a ‘teaser’ mode. Like all of the top horror games, the game is played in first -person mode which really adds to the submersion - you really feel like you are in the game. This is a computer only game which you can find on Steam and we don’t want to spoil this too much as it’s better to find out for yourself but expect to be very confused at first as you slowly begin to realise exactly what you are dealing with in Project Songbird. Expect lots of dark corridors, locked doors and some very eerie sounds.

The attention to detail is great and there are lots of weird items and other things just waiting to be explored. There are some puzzles to be solved too but nothing too difficult or tricky. Our pulse definitely increased whilst we played too, which is exactly what we want from horror. If you have a fear of manikins though, don’t play!

Silent Hill: Downfall

Set in a fictional Scottish Town in the mid-1990s, Downfall is a standalone spin-off of the Silent Hill franchise. The game is being developed by a Scottish game’s studio called Screen Burn Interactive so we have big hopes that Downfall will feel uniquely Scottish, saving us from an American studio’s version of a Scottish town! According to the developers, the fictional town of St Amelia where the game takes place is based on St Monans in Fife. If anyone saw the Loch Henry episode of Black Mirror, we are hoping that the game takes place in a real gritty Scottish village as we think such a location would work perfectly for a horror game.

Expect lots of fighting with monsters roaming the streets of St Amelia but also be ready to use stealth to survive too. The majority of the game will be spent on your own in dark, foggy weather conditions - so just your typical day in Scotland.

The Official ‘The Mummy’ Slot Game

Another key part of the main Universal Studios park in Florida, The Mummy is one of the most well-known and popular horror movies of all time. So much so, that it has had numerous spin offs and a ride themed around it. However, you may not know that there is also a The Mummy themed slot game too. Created by master game studio Playtech, The Mummy features images, videos and a soundtrack directly from the original two films. There are also a few Easter Eggs from The Scorpion King too. There are thousands of slot games out there and even more reviews of them but The Mummy slot is often highlighted by numerous independent slot game reviews such as the one here as one of the best slots out there.

It has to be noted that The Mummy film is more of a thriller/horror film and the game we discuss here is not particularly scary but if you are a big fan of The Mummy series then we are sure you will love the slot game too.

Resident Evil Requiem

We can’t finish a list of horror games without mentioning the Resident Evil franchise and this year saw the release of Resident Evil Requiem and a brand-new playable character, FBI analyst Grace Ashcroft. You will also get to play as return protagonist Leon Kennedy as the gameplay alternates between the two of them. Zombies and monsters are the main adversaries here and you can choose to play in either first or third person, with first person being designed for intense realistic gameplay and third person for action packed gameplay. This is also more of a survival horror game so you need to be mindful of preserving resources such as ammo and medical packs.

The graphics are excellent and if you are looking for a horror game to play, then Resident Evil Requiem is really the number one choice right now.
