There is currently a ban on taxing internets access and it was about to end. The U.S. House of Representatives has just voted to extend this ban until November 1, 2011. There are 9 states, however, that tax access and will continue to do so.

This is a good thing because internet access is already too expensive (and slow) when compared with the rest of the world.

Unfortunately, they did not vote on a permanent ban as many Representatives were calling for. The amendment does, however, separate out internet access from other net services like VOIP, which can be taxed.
