How can we get more variety in video games?

As it is right now, the industry seems kind of stagnant with too much focus on the same old games. You've got a million attempts to try and rip off Call of Duty at one end, a whole bunch of shallow free to play titles on smartphones and social networks on the other end and Nintendo's titles somewhere in between.

But how can we somehow get more varied games? Does the industry need more companies who aren't constantly told what to do by commercial backers and who are willing to make games in more niche genres? Perhaps with less of a ridiculous game development/marketing budget?

What do you think is needed to do this and maybe even save the games industry?

Companies seem too fixated on ripping one another off.

A huge example is how many games try to be like God of War now. Even Castlevania ( one of my previously favorite series) had its own unique platforming RPG style only for it to be a direct copy of God of War with the Lords of Shadows games. Darksiders reminded me of God of War with a sword... the list goes on...

The Indy developers are the worst for this! Minecraft comes out and all you see are generic clones on Xbox 360's Indy games sprouting out of the ground like daisies. The Android market has NUMEROUS games copying ones similar to the games on Facebook (I don't mean Words with Friends which is playable on both, but, rather, I am talking about games such as the Dance Club game) and they are even being made for 3DS now (found one in Wal-Mart's dump bin for $20 yesterday.

Developers need to go back to creating their own, original, concepts and focus on story and gameplay as well as listen to fan support rather than simply going "I think we can make a lot of money if we do this". Capcom was once the greatest developer around because they listened to their fans and now they just do what they want and are horrible.

Remember back in the 80's and 90's when you would see developers going "Oh, man! We are making this game and it is going to be cool because of this!" and it was never about graphics or anything that has been done before? That is what we need; developers who are doing what they love for no other reason than them loving it. When you enjoy your work it often shows - any advertising major will tell you that. Sure, you may enjoy being a developer or be excited about a project you are working on, but it is not the same thing. Be passionate in your work - not the work you ripped off.

Want to improve the quality of games? Let's return back to the days of the SNES and remove all the sports and COD-like games. I like the adventures I had in Super Mario World or Yoshi's Island.

And the RPGs of that era were top-notch, in my opinion, as well.

Couldn't agree more. I feel that the problem is that the developers nowadays are too scared to stray from a formula that's tried and true. There's a reason why many developers try to make a ton of COD rip offs. Its what a lot of people want, sadly. Especially teens, which are a huge market. They want to stay with what they know will sell, shallow as it may be. Doing something new and original is taking a big chance. The new game could be popular and sell really well. Or it could be a large, expensive flop. As for sports games though, I am not sure why they bother making all the madden and fifa games and the like. I have never seen anyone buy them, and I don't know anyone who buys them. Surely people are buying, because they are being made... But I personally do not think that the sports game market is that big...

Please, no one misunderstand what I am about to say as it is not supposed to be taken racially, but the sports games seem to be big with the colored community in general where I am from. Often times when I am in one of my two local Game Stops a group of colored men will come in and pick up a sports game or pre-order one, and I have been asked by several while at Wal-Mart as to which console has the best ones (which I would like to point out I think is cool because they usually are muscular and have tattoos but are VERY polite which breaks SO many stereotypes about how people's outer appearance reflects their inner - tattooed, muscular colored person? Playing sports games. Me, the skinny thin white nerd? Playing Call of Duty or some other highly violent game like Saints Row series).

I believe it really goes by location. Sports are big where I live in Florida as is racing, so the games for both sell much better here than they did back in my home state of Rhode Island. I DO miss "odd" racing games like Beetle Adventure Racing for the N64 with hidden pick-ups and passages and the like. The original Lego Racers... the "nontraditional" racing games.

That being said. I LOVED most of the sports games on SNES. I was a NHL and Madden Junkie. I don't even like sports or sports games in real life or console anymore. Remember Baseball Simulator 1.000 or the sequel for SNES? How about Milo's Astro Lanes for N64? why don't developers make sports games with powers and abilities like those anymore? Heck, I'll even take a newer Super Spike V Ball for NES.

We need people who actually CARE. No more: This could maybe make money, so let's try it.
I also hate when video games are made off of movies, TV shows, etc. They're stupid! Almost no kid wants to play Wizards of Waverlu Place 14: Trouble with Harry Potter copyrights.
We need less CoD games and more good games (No offense to CoD.) We need well thought games. Less blowing up. More plot. I hate how video games are not thought out. I also wish Nintendo would make more non-Mario games. I love Mario, but we have about 3-5 games for him on the 3ds, yet no games for Kirby. I also wish that Nintendo would make a Game Boy remake, or atleadt a port you can play them in. But these won't happen...

I agree, I miss the SNES period, but I miss the GB and GBC more.

I think one of the worst parts is, nowadays games seem to be trying to morph into the same style, action.

For example, Dead Space is one of my favourite games and the 3rd one was... Different. I can't say I felt scared at all playing it, and they even tried to introduce a cover system! -Which I of course never thought about using. From the rumours I saw, apparently EA told Visceral Games to make the game more like Mass Effect so that there is a wider audience thus more sales.

Resident Evil seems to be another victim of this action over horror style games now, which is saddening.

How about movies of video games? :P They are usually awful, from watching the Resident Evil series -which just went downhill with each movie- and the first Silent Hill -which I am still dying to play :c.

Resident Evil: Revelations was amazing and went back to the horror aspect by following Silent Hill's footsteps. If you want a TRULY scary game, try Dementium: The Ward - a FPS for the DS.

As for movies... Silent Hill 1 rocked (I liked Silent Hill: Revelations but not as much), and like you said, only the first RE movie. I thought Hitman and Max Payne were decent movies, though most would say otherwise...
