How come popular culture/the internet/art/other stuff only seems to know of gen 1's Pokemon?

Like how it seems every time Pokemon fan art ends up on GoNintendo/Kotaku/wherever it only seems to feature Pokemon from the first generation, and only the somewhat boring ones at that.

Heck, every time you see jokes and pictures of 'Pokemon in real life' it always seem to show the most dull ones. Never a Deoxys or Tyranitar or Arceus to be found and rarely a Mewtwo or Dragonite if you only count the first generation.

Do most people only know of the first generation or something? I'm kind of surprised there isn't at least more in reference to Gold/Silver/Crystal given how they came out when Pokemon 'mania' was still in full swing.

What do you think?

People probably know if it because they played it most in their childhood and find it unforgettable. And the fact that they're the most known (pikachu is most known of all obviously) out of all the 640+ pokemon today.

Maybe because the anime gave many 1st gen Pokemon unique characteristics, for example, Jigglypuff.
