How long until the Playstation 3 dies?

When do you think it will start to be rare console to see anyone on?
Also, when do you think developers will stop developing for the console and focus on the PS4 only.

I think the PS3 will not die until 2015 at the earliest. Games like Tales of Zesteria and Persona 5 are still PS3 exclusive and not coming out until 2015, and it wouldn't shock me to see more games announced and released well into 2016. It's still a popular system and people are still buying games for it.

Call me crazy, but I bet the PS3 will be rare in a decade. It still has a lot of potential to have good games, and we already saw how the PS2 was still very popular even after the release of the PS3, and with the PS3 having online support I expect that its community will last a long time. I don't think that this console will disappear soon.

I think the PS3 will live on for many years since the PS3 has a lot of games for it, and there are still games being released for the PS3. The number of gamers who own a PS3 is still higher than the PS4.

I think the PS3 will live on in Japan for many years because sales of the PS4 in japan has slowed down a lot since release where older consoles like the 3DS, Vita, Wii U and PS3 are outselling the PS4.

I think the PS3 won't become rare until the price on the PS4 comes down a little more or when there are more PS4 exclusive games. I honestly don't see any reason to upgrade to a PS4 just yet.

I can see it being officially discontinued in 2018 with game support ending in 2017.

This is what i think to be honest.
It could continue for a while more to be honest. I reckon game developers will keep developing for it for at least a decade more.

I think the PS3 will be around for a long time, especially is Sony doesn't add backwards compatibility to the PS4.
You can see the example of the PS2 that went strong for many many years after the launch of the PS3.

I was just going to mention the PS2, I think the PS3 is here for at least another 3 to 4 years going strong,

I'm thinking that the PS3 will last a few more years until it dies but it won't live for as long as the Playstation 2 did. The PS2 was legendary and rocked an incredible games library, the PS3 not so much. Plus, the PS4 seems to be well received so as the people adopt the new generation console the developers will embrace it also and leave the PS3 behind.

Whats really keeping the PS3 alive is the fact that the PS4 doesn't have backwards compatibility.

As long as the PS4 continues to lack it, I expect plenty of people to hang on to their PS3s. If they announce a new model with backwards compatibillity next week (just an example!) I think the PS3 has maybe one or two years left.

Playstation systems have a reputation of staying on the market longer than most consoles.  Even though online services for some games may slowly die down (Metal Gear Solid 4 dropping Metal Gear Online for example), the system will still be able to survive.  Unfortunately, this will also mean that some games will remain single-player only.  For example, Uncharted 2 does not have local multiplayer.  Once Playstation Network support for the PS3 goes down, the PS3 will be close to death.

This backwards compatibility fiasco with the PS4 is also keeping the system alive and well.  But you will see some companies moving towards the PS4, due to "easier" game development.

Sony has a tendency of charging too much for their new systems, then lowering the price. This seems to be when the previous system dies.

I think the PS3 might take a bit longer than previous systems though. I mean, the advancements between the PS3 and the PS4 aren't nearly as huge as the jump from the PS2 to the PS3 was.

I wouldn't doubt it if 2016 is the last year games are made for the PS3. Even though they are porting games to the PS3, they have to downgrade them. And porting games is not cheap.

The PS3 is no PS2, I doubt there will be another gaming system to match it.
I agree the PS2 is one of the best consoles.

I think a lot of game makers will continue making games for the PS3 for many years to come because of the large amount of PS3 consoles which 83 million consoles to date, so the PS3 number of users could rise to 158 million or more like the PS2 when Sony sells the PS3 for $99 or less in the future, and release the super slim PS3 model.

I think the PS3 will still have a few more years of support because the graphics and gameplay don't really look that much outdated at all. If the graphics of PS4 advance far enough that the PS3's gets left behind significantly, only then will people find a reason to update their consoles, but as of now, in my opinion, both are still at a fairly equal stage.

I agree the graphics of the PS4 looks a little bit better than the PS3, and the PS3 still has pretty good graphics which is good enough to satisfy many gamers.
