How to avoid those darn shells in Mario Kart 8...

I can say that I'm a decent driver. I drive a beat up Toyota car every single day. So I thought that my real world driving skills would also carry over to a game like Mario Kart 8. Well, at the beginning of each race, I do just fine. But then, 1 and a half minute into the race, I find myself getting hit in the rear by a freakin shell! It seems as though the opponents that are tailing me have attached a sort of rope to my vehicle as they seem to be able to follow my every move. What should I do in order to avoid all those items being fired at my behind?

It comes with practice and I must say that it is really annoying when you are winning a race in Mario Kart 8 and then out of nowhere it seems that you just keep getting hit from shells from all over. I really think it is annoying but after playing the game for a bit I have been getting the hang of it.
 
I don't know why, but I have been very lucky in this new Mario Kart 8, if I see a red shell icon coming into me for some reason it collides with something else and I can continue driving peacefully. I have hit myself with green shells more than people have hit me with any kind of shell... :P I guess you should only check behind you every once in a while and be aware of the items that your opponents are carrying.

I agree. It does take alot of practice! I watched my cousin play and it took a while.
 
I have no experince with Mario Kart 8, however, I have spend many hours in Mario Kart DS and if my memory is correct there are a lot of video's on youtube on how to avoid the blue shells. I remember it being quite tricky and timing being very importend, but definitely possible.

Sadly, you always need to use some sort of powerup:(
 
The trick is, if you're in first place and you get a power-up, save that power-up until you see a shell icon coming towards you. For example, if you have a banana peel power-up or a green shell power-up, hold it down so that it's behind your kart. That way, if someone tries to red shell or green shell you, it'll end up hitting the shell/banana peel and you'll be golden.

If it's a blue shell, you're toast!
 
Ah, but that's what Mario Kart special - shells equally screw over everyone... particularly the blue one. Actually the blue shell is my favorite, because I really like messing people up with it. In fact I purposely make sure to keep in the number 2 spot just so I have the opportunity to use it without the chance it'll get used on me.
 
Blue Shells are the bane of my Mario Kart existance.  

Once I was coming 2nd in MK 8 and I was approaching the first player.  As I was I had a red shell closing in.  I managed to just get in front of the first player and made him get in the path of the shell.  I was proud of that moment.
