According to this article, the total distance travelled between Mario's adventure starting and the final castle is... 3.4 to 3.7 miles. Which in the UK, is about the distance between here and the next town (probably a lot less in the US).
I walk 2.7 miles every month one-way to my bank and gamestop. I looked at the first level zoomed out and was like "that dude is way off!" but when I zoomed in and compared Mario's size to his environment and recalculated 1-1 I found that 1-1 for him was about the distance of me walking to the CVS at the end of my street, which is a 5 minute walk at best. Not even a quarter mile.
Or 5280 feet, which is 1760 yards. That's 17.6 football fields. So altogether that's anywhere from 59.84 to 65.12 football fields. That's still a long way. Especially for a fat Italian plumber such as Mario and Luigi.
Though I will admit, it does feel longer. Unless you use warp zones, then it's even shorter.

You both must be horrifically lazy if you think that is a long way. I walk 2.7 miles up and 2.7 miles back to Game Stop, my bank. the mall, or anywhere else I need to go constantly. It is a 45 minute to an hour walk (depending on what tempo the music is that I am listening to). That means Mario's entire journey is a mere 1 1/2 hours at best. Not at all that epic when you consider all he is doing is leaping on or over stuff or swimming. Though, I'll admit the pitfalls in world 8 are a bit bothersome.
I also love how you said Luigi is a 'fat Italian plumber'.
On another note, you could always think of it like this:
Bowser has one hell of an army. He's managed to turn the equivalent to the walk to the shops into a battlefield that'd presumably make Iraq look fairly safe. It might also make you wonder about his priorities. I mean, a full blown army for this? It's the equivalent of the US army declaring war on a micronation. In the 'tanks start rolling into the Hutt River Province' sense.

Not lazy. Just out of shape. xD
Also yeah I guess Luigi isn't that fat, but he's a bit plump.
I'm not sure how many miles I walk.. if I bring my 3ds to work, It takes about 2500 steps to and back home. Nevertheless I am always on my foot, running about at work for at least 6hrs+. So I prob do as much or maybe even more than Mario himself lol.
However Mario does a lot of leaping, jumping, dodging, swimming etc (i.e. putting his life at stake) so if we take in that stress factor - it is damn tiring lol.
