Hurricane Milton Forecast To Slam Into Florida Wednesday Night

I'll explain. We are subjected to many "natural disasters" throughout the year and - due to climate change* we almost expect to see them frequently or more frequently. I guess what I was trying to get at was that I expect to see recorded fatalities in developing or third-world nations, not in somewhere like the United States. I was just surprised to see that.

Well I mean with a storm that was as bad as this one (along with the one that slammed North Carolina), you run the risk of fatalities. Flooding and storm surge is going to happen in places that are prone to it, and that's why the people who live in those areas are told to leave or they risk their lives. It's high in third world countries because of poor infrastructure or simply nowhere else to go. It's not the same TBH.

And before the climate change thing is brought up, it's also the middle of hurricane season. Ends next month.

Tbh, Bangladesh also has a ridiculously high population density (one of the highest in the world), and is significantly smaller than the US. So I wouldn’t call it a fair comparison to the US. It’s like comparing a natural disaster happening in Cheyenne Washington to NYC. More people will be affected in NYC because of its sheer population.

You also have to consider that not everyone can afford to evacuate.

Yeah, there isn’t a service that tells people to go to a meetup location to hop on an all expense covered ride on like a Greyhound to some location to chill in a free Holiday Inn Express until the evacuation order is lifted.

I was in college in Louisiana when Hurricane Gustave hit, and some students were able to hop on a plane to leave, or had a car to drive, but I didn’t have a car, or money for a flight and had to stay in the dorms. There wasn’t a bus or anything that came to the campus to offer us a ride to evacuate.
